Hello,

I'm looking for recommendations for lower receivers for a general purpose AR.  I am currently looking at the following receivers:  RRA, Armalite, Bushmaster, Continental Machine, SOCOM...  Looking for any input you might have as well as some sources.

Thanks for your time!

I build a RRA lower last night parted out a bushmaster for another project sooo i had to fit the upper to the lower I found that the RRA is a VERY tight fight I had to beval the upper rear lug so the fit will be right could not close all the way.

Why didn't I put Colt down?  Is it easy to find just a receiver from Colt?

Thanks!

Theres a place in Shotgun News that always advertises colt stuff, including stripped lowers.

I realize that there are several quality makers of (affordable)lowers and other parts needed to build you own but just out of curiosity how much does a postban Colt lower usually cost?

Also, considering that some guys want the lightest AR possible has anyone ever taken the time to weigh the lower they use? I just saw a thread about the SOCOM lowers being overkill and heavier than a standard lower but no weight was given for the SOCOM or an "average" lower.

Colt doesn't sell lowers separately, but some dealers have them because they've sold the upper separately.

My advice is to buy any other lower, because only Colt lowers have non-standard sized parts (in this case, the fire-control parts use oversize pins).  Also note that Continental Machine & Tool does the machining for Colt's lowers (as well as for Bushmaster and a few smaller companies), so any lower from them will have equal quality machining, but will have Mil-Spec parts sizes.

If you're not particular about the lower markings, get a CMT upper and save some $$$.

Thanks for all the input.

Troy, thanks especially for reminding me about the pin sizes.

Any good sources for Continental Machine and Tool receivers?

Troy,
Is my memory failing, or does CMT also provide Double-Star?

$79 from www.Eaglefirearms.net

If I'm building a parts gun that I have no plan to sell I buy the cheapest priced forged lower I can find.  Right now this is it, except they're out of stock at the moment.

You really should look into the Mega, I have built 12 guns in the last 2 years and the Mega was by far the best of all the lowers that I have used.

I also used a Mega A3 upper and it matched perfectly and had zero play between the upper and lower.

Just my 2 cents worth.

I've actually never heard of Mega - could you point me towards a source for them?

Thanks

Concerning Continental Machine and Tool in New Britain, CT., they also made the Century Arms Inc. lowers a few years back that everyone I spoke to (and read about) loved.  About a month ago I assembled a "Stag Arms" /CMT lower with a RRA kit and it turned out perfect.  The lower has a beautiful Black finish and is perfectly machined.  In fact, I couldn't find a single tool mark other than the forging-line in the trigger-guard.
