I have an colt a2 upper with an m4 barrel. I have been thinking about a flattop upper, but have been told that the front site is taller for an a2(carry handle) than a flat top. They said I would have to buy a new barrel to match up with the removeable rear sight. Is this true? |

Shooter2, You have that backwards. The front sight on an A2 equipped rifle is LOWER, not higher. There is an easy/cheap solution, you can get a front sight post (I mean just the sight, not the base) that is taller. Midway has 'em for $15, they are .030" taller than the A2 front sight post. Sighted in, the front sight ends up nearly as high as the sight base protective "ears". It's a different sight picture than you are used to with the A2 but works OK (I did this and you get used to it). I read of other options (here, of course) - I think Colt makes taller front sight bases for their M4s, and I recall something of replacing certain rear sight components in the detachable carry handle. Perhaps someone here that is more of an expert than I can elucidate further. Scot |
