I recently bought an upper off of the AFRCOM site. It is supposed to be a pre-ban Colt 20" heavy barrel. I am concerned due to the purplish look to the receiver finish. It looks like some BMs I have seen. The upper is marked as follows: C and H just below the rear site, adjustment (on the right side) as well as two stamped marks (on the right)where the gas tube joins the upper. One looks like a triangle and the other looks like a "[" with a letter in it. Eyes aren't real good anymore. The barrel is a HB for sure, just no markings to be found. Can someone with more knowledge than me (a newbie) help me out? Thanks... K |

The upper is Colt, that's the "C". The smaller marks are the proofs. Is this an SP1 (A1 sights, no forward assist, no brass deflector) upper? Is the auto sear clearance cut present? It may have been refinished, a lot of the older uppers were and unfashionable shade of green. No markings on the barrel? It's not a Colt then. There's a bunch of info in the Troubleshooting FAQ and Glossary about cast and forged parts and markings. http://ar15.com/forums/announcement.html?b=3&f=66&id=193 |
