Howdy all,

I know this has been covered, and yes I have searched for it but.....

What is the minimum legal length for an AR stock?

And if I purchased a VLTOR stock and tube (or similar) to fit a post-ban rifle, then modified it not to colapse past said length without tools, would I be prime for violation, or in the clear?

Feel free to inundate me with older threads.

Thanks for your time, and shoot straight.

I have read that its ok to have it in the shortest position as long as its is pinned and cannot be moved.  I saw a post on this a couple weeks ago ill try to track it down.  I believe someone else said you could buy a magpull stock and they would fix it from the factory then if you wanted to change it you sent it back to the factory and they would readjust it. Like i said i dont think it matters what length you shorten it to as long as its fixed and cannot be changed on the fly. the 26" overall length is your only enemy but it would be hard to get shorther than that without a SBR.

Thank you for your reply.

I specifically wanted an adjustable stock to use on the range, but I also for CQB drills (vest and body armor) and 3 gun matches.  I thought the stock could be adjustable, but not down to a certain length, i.e. why RRA has "pinned colapsable" stocks, but their shorties are solid stocks.  Hence, why I come here for answers!

Thanks for your help!!

I think this is the link i was looking for. http://ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=118&t=177658   Another option is to get a RRA or similar enter fixed stock and buy an adjustable buttplate.  the link has a picture of the fulton setup.  That would give you a post ban adjustable stock

You are not allowed to have any stock that is readily adjustable on the gun if it is a post-ban.  Meaning, that if you need a tool you are good to go.  There is absolutely no movement allowed within certain length ranges.

IIRC, the minimum length a rifle may legally be configured in is 26".  The bbl cannot be any shorter than 16", and I know the upper/lower tube extension (part the buffer tube screws into) is at least 10" so any length you configure the stock in will be legal.  HTH, and YMMV, and I am NOT a legal authority to be used in a court of law.  [smile]

This seems to be a good link as well, VLTOR being the search string.

Thanks for your help, I will do some more digging.

And to anyone else out there, to clarify, no adjustable stocks period on post ban lower, or just not adjustable  down to a certain length?

I appreciate your help.

**EDIT**  The above post clarifies.  Adjustability as long as a tool in needed to do it.  Or I get a post ban lower.  I will be quiet now ;-)

Thanks again.

No collapsible stock of any kind on any postban rifle.  The way around this is to get an adjustable butt plate.  These need tools to adjust and is not technically part of the original stock itself.  Two reasons why it is legal.
