I am thinking of getting a RAS 2 because they are offered at a great price and I also like the fact that it free floats the barrel. But i don't like the hump. Is it possible to install the RAS 2 without the hump? I know this will make it look like RAS but can it still free float? Thanks.

While the EE guys are probably the best to answer this, my first impression of your question is NOT! Won't mount up correctly/tight.

Wait a minute, I'm getting something.......ahhhh! I see a the older KAC RAS in your future. [;)]

The RAS attaches by the hump.  Theres no removing it.  You'll have to get the original FF RAS, unless of course you have a permanent flash hider, and then you cant due to the front sight having to be removed for FF RAS installation.

I as well did not like the hump when looking into rail systems. Then i saw a vision of the SIR in my future and it worked :)

Is it possible to install the RAS by removing the barrel from the upper as opposed to removing the front sight?

Or will the barrel extension get in the way?

Have you seen a RAS2 in person? I just received my SS special and the hump is not nearly as conspicuous as it appears in pics. I was surprised at how compact the whole system is. But then again my former rail system was a SIR #45.[;)]

No, you won't be able to get the barrel nut in the right place without removing the front sight base.  If you have a permanent muzzle device your life will be much easier with a SIR or the RASII.

Too bad that KAC didn't make another "bridge" to bolt on your lower behind the first one (to easily mount a rear scope ring on the RASII).

Instead we have to patch something together on our own.

Anyone with any pull at KAC wanna get them to knock out a single "bridge" with front and rear bolts?

Bueller....

If I'm mounting direct onto the receiver, I use a pair of high rings. If mounting off a riser or my SIR, I use a pair of Med. ht. rings, and all rings come in pairs (at the same ht. from all the ring and scope makers. With a hump in the way how do I mount a conventional scope, buy off set rings that are only made to compensate for the ht. of the hump? No thanks, the choices of accuratly mounting conventional options are too limited.
