How are peel washers used to index a muzzle brake on an AR-15? I just received some from Brownells and they look like regular washers.

Thanks

If you look at your peel washer, you'll see it's actually a bunch of little washers glued together.  To use it, you simply peel off enough layers until your muzzle device is indexed properly.  As tedious as this sounds, this is the reason most people use what looks like a lock washer to index their muzzle devices.

I prefer a 1-piece crush washer instead.

Put it on, tighten the brake/hider to the location you desire, it's done.  Juggling the little flakes of the peel washer under the brake/hider to get it to tighten to the final desired position is a real pain.

Olympic Arms carries them for $4.00.  Look here under "accessories"..........

Thanks. I just looked at them again with a magnifier and they all appear to be single washers with very smooth sides. Next I crushed one in a vise and it separated into two washers. The sides of the washer where it split were cupped so it would be impossible to split them. Maybe the ones I got from Brownells are defective and cannot be separated normally.

More properly called a "crush washer." A1's use a lock washer. A crush washer is a solid washer, convex in form.

ETA, dam you guys are fast. RRA and Sableco have crush washers for $2.

The easiest way (for me) to split peel washers is using a small sharp knife. I screw the flash on as far it will go and index then cut the stack to the same width. From there it usually only takes a couple of try fits to get it to work.

Crush washer... best thing to happen to M16 flash suppressors.  I'll never fiddle with a peel washer again.

Thanks Tweak.  I completely drew a blank while I was typing that.  The only thing that popped into my mind was "lock washer."

You're welcome Vinnie, I just didn't want someone ordering the wrong part. FWIW, I had to look up the name too. [:)]

You have to heat a peel washer with a flame to burn out the adhesive and then separate the layers.

Crush washer is a one-time use and if you tighten too far you have to get another washer and start over.  Still more convenient than peeling off layers one at a time.
