| Is the FFRAS a stable platform for mounting optics? |
|
a lot of people think so, but I own two and no is the simple answer. Would you mount optics to a FF tube? the FF RAS is no more rigid than a FF Tube and with a vertical grip attached it is more likely to be moved in use. Everyone will tell you that there is no movement, but there is, it is slight but it is there, RAS II and M4/M5 RAS are more stable mounting plaforms. |

It works for me. I have the front ring on my SR15 Match attached to the first full slot in the FF RAS. I primarily shoot this one off the bench, but switching to the bipod does not shift the POI. There is some play in it out near the gas block, that is true. But back near the barrel nut it is hardly any movement. I can live with it until I get a TS30 to mount on the receiver only. |

This sums it up. If you need to mount a IR laser then what the hell. It's better than no IR laser. When you need to make ultra precise shots I'm sure you can do what non-floating M-16A2 shooters do, (rest the forearm on your hand- and not pull on the RAS-mounted grip or put excessive pressure on the forend). SEAL snipers are using SPR's with RAS mounted IR lasers so my guess is it is a workable combination, albeit less than ideal. I like the FF RAS and it sure beats not shooting and waiting for the URX II with a box of parts. (I waited 8 months and then put my rifle together in September, I'lve so far had it for three months that wouldn't have been the case had I continued to wait.) with one scope ring mounted near the gas block (the other on the reciever) you get less than half the deflection experienced by mounting the entire sight on the RAS. |

Quoted: RAS II and M4/M5 RAS are more stable mounting plaforms. Is that for REAL? WTF have I been waiting? If it is more stable, then I will take both M4 and M5 RAS over FF RAS, since they are user-installable without tools. (not saying I'm going to mount optics, but I just wanted no play) |
| Well, I look at it this way, If you exert pressure on the rail system when shooting, it will move, free float or not. The movement may be very, very slight and won't matter in practical use, but it will move. The advantage of the free flaot is that the movement will not effect the barrel. This will account for more consistency in movement when you take into account that the barrel harmonics aren't affected differently each time and that a properly installed FF rail system will not move all that much when you exert pressure. The movement and POI change will be consisten as the barrel is not touched and the RAS will only flex xo much. The M4 and M5 RAS will exert preesure on the barel, thus affecting it adversely. Like I said, the movement is very slight and won't matter in practicl terms. In competiton, 0.5 MOA might matter, in real life, it won't. |

Quoted: Will the URX be the first system that does not clamp directly to the rails on the receiver to provide a stable platform for optics? Or will the SIR and RAS2 still be the only options? Actually, the URX will at least be second: http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=12&t=177799&w=searchPop http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=12&t=174776&w=searchPop |
