Hi, I'm debating which rail system to get.  I like the slim profile and weight of the KAC stuff.  I'm not a huge fan of the hump on the RAS II, but I've never seen one in person.

Anyway, the only thing keeping me from a regular FF RAS is the installation.

Is is necessary to remove my permanantly attached phantom to install?  Front sight post?

What if the barrel is not yet on the reciever?

Also, what is the real advantage of FF vs. non-FF?  Is it that much better?

Thanks

Yes, in order to install, any muzzle device and the front sight base must be removed.

Yes, FF is very important:

Yes you have to remove the front sight base, since it can only move toward the muzzle, that makes it necessary to remove the brake/flash suppressor.  If the barrel isn't on the receiver, then you have to remove the standard delta ring, spring, and barrel nut.  Install the KAC supplided barrel nut, install the barrel, then the RAS itself.
The only way where you don't have to remove the muzzle device is if you have a low profile gas block that can pass through the RAS.
FF RAS has better cooling, if you tightly wrap your arm with the sling it won't change the point of impact, ditto if you use bipods.

Remvoing the FSB is without a doubt one of the most frustrating things in the AR15 do-it-yourself experience.
Two new Bushmaster barrels, about 3 hours of pounding, cutting, cussing, more cutting, cussing, pounding....you get the idea [:)] result in two dead FSB that I could have used elsewhere.  Other members report that you got to use a bigger drift punch and a serious hammer, but these taper pins should never be that hard to remove, Bushmaster must use a machine to press them in.

Oh yeah, if there's one dubious good thing that came out of all this, is that the Bushmaster FSB can take a beating.  I hammered the sh*t out of the FSB, the hammer hardly made much of a dent on it, the pic shows some of the pounding [:d]

I know, Kisara, I couldn't resist being a smart ass.

Hey, just stating facts.  They may not be popular, but those are the facts. If you don't believe me, just look into it. [;D]

[:o)] Alright, I'll stop now. [:D]

I don't know about you guys.  I've removed the pins from 3 Bushmaster FSB's, and they all came out pretty easy.  BUT, I have a small anvil (cut from a section of railroad track) and I whack the pins directly to get them moving.

I think the main problem you guys are having is not having something firm enough behind your barrel, so you're losing a lot of the force from your hammer.

Words of wisdom. To get those taper pins out you gotta use proper hammer and (brass)punches and steady table. Plate of lead under the FSB would be good, too. It doesn´t leave marks and it is firm.

After much swearing and ineffective hammering, I used a vise to press them out part way.  Then a punch and small ball peen did the rest.
