So my aluminum free flote tube was getting hot and my Ace stock and I were having a disagreement. Solution? 550 cord. At least untill I save up for that SIR. Have to see what it feels like at the range.

Ahhh... 550 cord! That stuff ranks right up there with Duct/100 MPH Tape and Bailing wire. You gotta' love it!

"Its gonna melt." no way. That handguard getting too hot to touch is a 150-160 or so degree phenomenon, the 550 cord probably melts at closer to 450-550degrees. If he wrapped the barrel he would have been in trouble but the free float tube simply won't get hot enough before the gas tube blows up. The part you attached to the fropnt sight block will melt (attach it to the sling swivel or double it back and attach it to itself )

I've had sling swivels get hot enough to burn on contact as well... Best to attach it to itself.

550 cord (parachute cord) is only polyester. It will become sticky at 350 degrees.

I can attest paracord does indeed melt ! As it was attached to the front sight post (see below), it gave no warning, the barrel was VERY hot, it just 'pulled' away. poof. Paracord can indeed melt away. I am sure you guys are right and I should stay away from the barrel, gas block and swivel. I will test it and refine the wrapping if I like the material. Thanks for the input.
