I have owned an AR-15 for years and I have always wondered about this . If I bought a new upper would a new bolt or my used bolt simply drop in ? Would headspacing need to be checked?

First, welcome to the board!

Second, it would not be a bad idea to check the headspace. For me, I have a dedicated bolt to each upper that I own. I have however, used different bolts with different uppers without problems. I have problems using well worn parts against new ones though. Better safe than sorry IMHO.
