If I have a Vortex permanently installed on my 14.5" pre-ban barrel, can I mount a bayonet or is the Vortex too large in diameter for the bayonet to fit? Thanks.

The Vortex is a NATO-standard 22mm-diameter muzzle device, just like the Phantom and USGI flash suppressors.  All standard bayonets (such as the M7 and M9) will fit over the Vortex.

That is a tough question to answer!  When the Vortex first came out a number of them would flare out during the process of having the flash supressor welded to the barrel.  I had heard later that they had changed the metal used but it always kept me from buying one perminantly mounted.

So, given you have the upper, I am afraid you will have to just try!  I had a vortex on a 14.5-in upper (for my M-16) and mine worked just fine.  Mine wasn't welded fast  however!

Can you take it with you to a gun show and see if a bayonet fits?  Do you have a friend that can let you try his?  If not, let me know and I will measure the mounting ring on one of mine to give you an idea if it will work or not!

Also, some bayonets fit tighter than others as I think my M7 is pretty loose while my M9 is a little tighter! Good luck but I think your best bet is just try it as it should work... but some didn't!

I have heard that the newer ones are made out of a stronger metal, so hopefully it won't flare. I don't know anyone who has one, so I guess I will order one and try it out. Thanks for the info guys.

Bayonet fits over the Vortex or Phantom.  No question about it.

Does anyone know who has the best price on a Vortex?

I've got one NIW that I'd trade you for a couple USGI 20 rounders.

I just bought a new tactical vortex and it is strong and heavy and I thought it'll do.

M 4 carbine has run his through 200rds of auto with no problems,

If you have and A-2 20in or 16in I'ld reccomend trimming 4/10in off this in a lathe (as it is really long to enable the 14.5in barrels to be legal 16inch barrels. Like a New G-36 FH.

I bet the length isn't neccassary for 99% flash reduction and the length of the forks just makes this more vulnerable.

Oh and bayonets are a rog that thing is the exact same diameter as std A-2
