I'm bit hard by the AR-15 bug, so last thing I have to do is pick an upper out. Have a receiver coming from Gunsmoke (one of these days hopefully if they ever find anymore around to ship out) and the rest of the lower parts from Pete at Legal Transfers (I had him upgrade the trigger to a 2 stage). So now, I just need to purchase the top half of the rifle. Want a complete upper, one where I can just push the 2 pins together and have a complete rifle. Any recommendations? What should I be looking for? I think for now, I'm going to stick with a "budget" upper, one that has a Shaw or Wilson barrel. I've seen where Model 1, J&T, and M&A sell a complete upper for just less than 300 bucks. I think this is where I'm leaning. I'm going to give Pete a chance to quote me out an upper as well. Just looking for a good quality upper for now. I'm sure the barrel that comes with these types of uppers can outshoot me, anyway, so don't really need a 800 dollar upper. Thanks for any help/recommendations. vmax84 |

The $300 uppers generally DO NOT include a bolt and carrier. COMPLETE NEW uppers run $400 and up. You also didn't say if you want a 16" or 20" barrel. Here are some links for prices... ( Rock River uppers) http://www.sableco.net/id21.htm ( DPMS - many choices ) http://www.shooterstore.com/acb/showprod.cfm?&DID=90&CATID=507&ObjectGroup_ID=1243 Don't overlook the Equipment Exchange here, lots of stuff is sold here. Pete is of course another good option! |

I probably would have purchased from Pete (the receiver), but I didn't want the "U.S. Property" engraved on it. Would like to purchase a 20" barrel. For the price of what an upper goes for, wouldn't I be better buying a complete kit (minus the receiver) from someone like J&T, Model 1, M&A, etc., and then selling the trigger components? Seems like the uppers go as much as a complete kit. Am I wrong on this? Thanks. vmax84 |
