Why haven't we seen a quick barrel replacement system (essentially built into a proprietary upper receiver with "lever operated barrel nut" and proprietary handguard) ?
To me, it just seems with all the interchangeability of SBR length uppers and popularity of calibers like 300blk that use the same bolt/mags that it would be a no brainer by now.. (or is there something out there already that I'm not aware of?) |

I think swapping the upper is the fastest thing.
I have a quick change system from Critical Objectives ($60) that's pretty simple. I use it on a side charging upper I have (I can't afford multiple side charging uppers). Their system is an almost standard looking barrel nut that you tighten into place as usual. The barrel nut is threaded (interior) along it's entire length. You slide your barrel in through the barrel nut, and then tighten a castle nut that locks the barrel in (the castle nut threads into the barrel nut). They give you 2 castle nuts, so that you can pre-install them on your barrels (as you can picture in your mind's eye, you have to slide that castle nut on BEFORE you clamp on your gas block). The castle nut is tightened with a wrench they give you, but an armorers wrench works too. You don't have to torque the castle nut to any specification, only tighten firmly by hand. Pretty straight forward system. Fairly cheap too. Like I said, not bad for an upper that is too expensive to own 2 of. |
