I've started my first build. I've completed the lower assembly and ready for upper. Here are my thoughts. Please correct or recommend.
1- I have about $750.00 for this next stage. This does not have to be the only money I put into the project, just all for right now. I don't need to finish the project with this but would like to get close.
2- My goal is to build at least an upper mid range rifle that will shoot moa. Not that I can shoot that well  these days.
3- I don't like the pistol grip that came with the lower kit I got as it seems small for my hands. I'm 6'3" with larger hands. Would like sand or OD  grips and rails.
4- My head is spinning trying to decide on barrel length, twist and material. Here is my thinking so far:
    a) 1:8 twist. would like to be reasonably accurate with 55-70 gr bullet.
    b) Can't decide between 16" and 18" barrel. Leaning toward 16" but 18" would not  be to long.
    c) Would chrome lined barrel accommodate this criteria?
I guess what I am hoping for is a rifle anyone might like to own.
I live in Colorado and prairie dogs and coyotes make decent targets.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I am happy with my Aero Precision m4e1 upper handguard combo and Faxon 16" mid length gunner. I doubt Ill ever be more accurate than my rifle.

Many options in that range,
I went with PSA, and their CHF 16" barrel.
There are those who love Windam, but I haven't used them, yet.

If you want a chrome lined barrel that will shoot around moa, criterion has to be at the top of your list imo. For precision guns, I like the Vltor Mir upper receiver. Finish it off with a geissele, slr, alg, or griffin armament hand guard.

For pistols grips? I'm partial to bcm

Here you go! This was my first build and I will be helping my brother and uncle building some just like it because after they shot it they had to have one too.
Aero precision lower with Larue MBT2S trigger. The upper is the Aero Precion M4E1 upper hand guard combo with Faxon 16" Gunner barrel and WMD bcg. I am very impressed with how it runs and so was everyone at the range when I broke it in.

I think I saw some at Granite Ridge Outfitters. I have never ordered from them before to be able to recommend them personally.

It's going to cost a lot more than $750, but you might want to take a look at the MK12 thread...

I have been thinking about building a precision gun & if I do, it will be the MK12.

I think you should start a Stingray build. That is one fine looking car! Might take a touch more than $750, though.

The key is don't skimp on the barrel... My all around rifle I put this barrel on... it shoots sub moa at 150 yds and didn't break the bank. They will have more in stock soon.

As for the handguard run these. They are basically midwest industries but 100.00 less. With the barrel and handguard you will be the same price as buying a decent handguard and a cheap 100.00 barrel. But you will have a amazing barrel and excellent handguard. You can't go wrong....

BCM Standard 16" Mid Length Upper Receiver Group w/ BCM KMR- *ALPHA* 9" Handguard

$603.95

Goes to $822.90 if you add a BCM BCG & charging handle.  A bit above your budget but IMO you won't regret it.

I got the M4E1 at Granite Ridge. I ordered after closing on Friday evening and it shipped on Monday. I call that fine service.

Another thought would be to collect a couple of lowers and build a budget gun - we might not be able to get any more come Nov.

Of course YMMV,

I recently just got done building mine, although, I'm no where near seasoned like most of the people on this forum. Jjust look at my post count :)
I over spent on my rock river arms upper and also added a BCM free float rail, which I could have bought through BCM already completed, for less money.
But when I started my build, I wasnt aware of BCM and the products they offered or daniel defense and several others.
I would suggest reading and researching on all the possible accessories and options YOU would like to have on your rifle and go from there.
You may find a complete upper for exactly what you want at a price point you are happy with.

Also, go to the range and rent/shoot different ar platforms to get a feel of what you want.
I personally chose a mid-length gas system because I've shot carbine length and mid-length and I prefer mid-length for a smoother and slightly less recoil action. (ive never shot rifle length gas systems, but id love to try)

As far as the pistol grip goes, definitely get the Magpul MIAD Pistol Grip. It has about 3 different pistol attachments/bkack plates that allows you to change the "diameter" of the grip itself for small to larger hands. Also has a nice plastic bottle holder for oils/lubes/liquids

OP here is a combo for the M4E1 upper and the new Quantum mlok handguard, would be perfect for what you describe.

$175

I concur, my 18" fluted SPR barrel makes 800 yard shots fairly easy.  You won't find a better barrel at that price point.
