I'm one of those guys that hates shooting a billboard. Quality manufacturing should speak for itself, not the huge logo on the product.

This sentiment extends to my choice of lowers. I know McKay, Nodak, Range Tool, and a handful of other manufacturers make lowers with minimal markings, but I'd like to go further toward minimalism.

Is it legal/possible to manufacture lowers with all of the pertinent markings inside the trigger guard? Are there regulations as to font size and depth that prevent it from lowers being made this way?

Thanks for taking the time to read and answer.

Always best to go to the horses mouth(or page in this case)

https://www.atf.gov/firearms/firearms-guides-importation-verification-firearms-ammunition-firearms-verification-overview

But as you will notice, yes there are certain things that have to be there.

There is no legal reason the required manufacturer's markings couldn't be made inside the trigger guard area, if a manufacturer so wished.  It is unobscured, on the receiver, and visible without disassembly simply by knowing where to look.

Maybe ATF would bitch about it not being "conspicuous", I dunno.

ETA at least one manufacturer has put their required markings on the front of the magazine well, as opposed to the side.

One of the problems with inside the trigger guard I see is the size requirement, which all guns manufactured after 2002 require 1/16 of an inch and if it is a standard AR, with the bottom of the trigger guard being removable, it would not be able to be put on there, it would have to go into the cast section of the trigger guard.  Also, with putting the name, address, city and state, I don't know that you would have enough room, in addition it has to be marked for caliber or multi.

Not the removable trigger guard, silly - the inside of the trigger guard/well section, along the bottom of the receiver. Plenty of room.

Yes, just like that photo. Short, small, and sweet. Short company name, serial number, and "multi" for the cal designation.

You did notice, I said "Couldn't be there" Just covering a base. believe it or not, all kinds of customers ask all kinds of things from those of us that hold the license to actually manufacture.  My partner and I have been asked some to do some real wild things over the years!  I did notice in the image you posted, the caliber is not marked and the quality is so poor, it actually looks like a screen print, but I imagine it is an engraved mark.  In truth, I didn't say it couldn't done, I just don't know if it could be done in such a way as to fulfill all of the BATF requirements, or if you would get an agent with a stick up his ass, that says it is improperly marked.  Also, that looks like a model number, not a serial number, unless that is the first one they made and the next one would be SBR02?  Just curious about the one you are using for illustrative purposes.

When I don't want any marks on my gun I just hog out an 80% receiver and leave it clean.

No, fair 'nuff, bro - I just let my 07/C2 expire earlier this year - we constantly have to balance what we'd like to do against regulatory issues and profitability issues, and regulatory issues.

ETA: guess my drunk butt really likes regulatory issues :(

Could you post what the actual regs are? I've looked and can't seem to find a definitive list of requirements to mark a lower.

If you read the link in my first response it will take you to the BATF page on identification and how a firearm must be marked, talks about import as well as domestic manufacture.  There is not much on location, and normally that indicates it is best to error on the side of caution, it is always best to leave very little to them to interpret.

No problems on my part at all, I just don't want to see anybody get in trouble..  As you well know, if you can avoid as much contact with them as possible, the better life will be.

Sounds like finishing an 80 percent lower would be your best bet.
