So I went to a local gun store today to look at the Ruger AR556 they had in stock. I asked to look at it and showed my interest in buying it, and eventually just using the receiver it was on for a custom build, but the guy told me that the receiver was proprietary, as was most of the parts on the gun. He then tried to sell me another AR that was $200 more.

But is the receiver really proprietary? If i wanted to cannibalize it for another build would I be able to? I honestly think this guy was full of BS and was just trying to push another firearm on me to get rid of it.

All parts can be swapped out for any ar standard part you want.  Upper and lower are forged and run the usual thread patterns.

That's only for the ar556.  The SR556 piston setup is a different critter entirely.
