Hi. New to the forum. Been lurking for a while gathering some great info so thanks for that. Been hunting and shooting conventional weapons for many years but just built my first AR (.223) from PSA. Enjoyed it a lot and will be building more. My question now is about Linear Comps. I've read some old posts but they were in fact old. I thought I'd try to get some new opinions. Of course there's not a lot of recoil in these rifles but always looking to reduce muzzle jump a little. I have my own 200 yard range on my land but I am surrounded by horse and livestock farms. I don't want to make any enemies when I decide to run 200 rounds in an afternoon. Short of a suppressor I figure a Linear Compensator is my best bet. I'll be shooting into my own property but I'm not sure how much sound mitigation will really take place. I guess I can only do so mcuh without going to a suppressor. So now I'm trying to decide which compensator to go with. I'm on a budget so price is an issue. The Kaw Valley offering is a definite possibility. Well Made at a good price. http://www.joeboboutfitters.com/Kaw_Valley_Precision_22cal_Linear_Comp_1_2x28_Blac_p/kvp-linear223-blk.htm Then there's the Kineti Tech. This is the two piece type with a "can" http://www.amazon.com/Kineti-Tech-Muzzle-Redirect-threaded-Sleeve/dp/B01B1S94JW/ref=sr_1_4?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1460346940&sr=1-4&keywords=kineti-tech+muzzle+brake Lastly there are Kineti Tech knock offs like this one. http://www.amazon.com/Optics-Muzzle-Redirect-threaded-Sleeve/dp/B01AMXBZ76/ref=pd_sbs_200_2/179-0272691-1069540?ie=UTF8&dpID=51qAVU8R5zL&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL160_SR160%2C160_&refRID=1QZD9WYCTY5F3M1VA23B#Ask Any reason these won't work as well? So looking for opinions especially those with experience with any of these. Thanks for the help! |

The Kaw Valley is a good linear comp, i have never personally used it though, I have used the Noveske Pig, the KAK flash can slim, and Troy Claymore. Of the them all the Claymore is my favorite probable the best sound throwing properties of the bunch, and also much smaller. I have heard the Kaw Valley is even better than the Claymore, but its also a bit bigger.
Now as far as sound I am not really sure what you are trying to accomplish. Linear comps through the sound down range, so that the sound doesn't affect the shooter or people to the side as much, but it doesn't make it any quieter, it will be perceived by the shooter as quieter but much louder down range. Given what you describe a suppressor is really going to be the best option. Also linear comps depending on caliber will noticeably increase recoil, and back pressure if working correctly. They will not decrease muzzle jump. |

Yeah, it really does sound like a suppressor is what you're looking for if you don't want to annoy the neighbors. A linear comp is only going to reduce concussion for the shooter by sending the blast downrange...there is no sound reduction.
That said, the Kaw Valley, Black River Tactical (BRT), Simple Threaded Device (STD) and DPMS Levang linear comps all work nicely....with the Levang probably being the most affordable. |
