I am about to get an ambi safety for my AR-15 and am trying to decide if I should get a standard or short throw. I am about to start doing some 3-gun matches and was thinking a short-throw would help speed things up. Any thoughts?

Welcome to ARF.

I have a few short throw (ambi) safeties...and I prefer them.

But let's be real....do you actually think you're gaining any meaningful time advantage because of your safety ?  Surely, there are any number of other areas where you could cut down on your time.

Bottom line, IMO, just get what you like / want, and move on.  The time you spent reading this post could have been used to practice your re-loads...

My BAD-ASS  St is my fovorite safety. With that being said, both the BSD-ASS St and an AXTS Talon I had previous required some fitting to work with certain triggers so be prepared for that if you have any aftermarket trigger group. I have 3 Noveske STS safeties and they have all dropped in and worked perfectly with all of the triggers I have tried . I really like the Noveske triggers for the most part. I don't like the look of their levers as much though.

The main advantage of a short throw ambi to me is that it doesn't stick down as far on the finger side, rubbing against my hand.

Check out the Damage Industries short throw safety, has a more OEM appearance and is half the price of the BAD-ASS or Talon.

Thanks for the replies. My trigger is a Geissele sd3g. I'm sure that I'm overthinking this, and as Hollywood mentioned, it probably won't make a difference. I may just stick with a standard throw since that is what all of my shooting has been done with.

For the cost, I put the Magpul/Noveske 60 degree safety in all of my rifles.  Haven't had an issue yet and they work great.

You should get the AXTS Talon ambi safety. It has different options for the length/size of the levers which can be swapped out without tools. It can also be easily switched from a 90 degree safety to a short throw 45 without even having to remove the safety from the lower.

I have a couple sets of Battle Arms BAD ASS and BAD-CASS safeties and while they are great, my next ambi safety will be a Talon. My buddy recently installed one and I thought it was great. Looks good, feels good and the ability to switch between a 90 and 45 degree shirt throw is a great feature....

I'm a lefty and I didn't feel any advantage with an ambi. My other rifles do not have them after seeing ambi's as a gimmick in my experience. Too many years using it the normal way turns out to be no big deal and I'm used to it by now.

I just put a Seekins 60 degree selector on my Aero STS lower and while I like it overall, the ends are almost like needles. They definitely need to be rounded off/beveled.

I saw this thread and came to post the EXACT same thing. The texture on the seekins is terrible, it literally hurts my fingers to operate it.

I use this. Not for any speed advantage, I find it easier to put back on 'safe' w/my thumb when the safety's at 60 degrees instead of 90 degrees.

I don't recall which brand I went with, but this was the reason, not that a mil-spec is difficult. The build was for my wife, a novice, with smaller weaker hands. Figured  less movement would make it easier and/or more intuitive.
As it happens I like it pretty well too, I don't think I'll be replacing my mil-specs, but future builds will likely wear short throws.
