Drew these in AutoCad then colored them in MS Paint.  The inside diameter of the black outline is .955" when printed to scale.  Here are TIFF images:

For some reason those won't print correctly for me.  When I open the files in Adobe Reader, it says that your document is 22.9" x 17.7".

That's weird.  I don't have full Adobe at home.  I will try to fix them tomorrow.  I just tried the tiff images and they are correct.

ETA: You were right.  I fixed them and put them back into the links above.  Somehow I exported them wrong.  But they both now print 8.5 x 11 at full size no scaling.

I put two .308 rounds through a dime (100yds) a few years ago, I thought I missed with the first shot so I fired a second.  The first shot stretched the dime out of shape enough that I got the second one through without breaking the hole from the first.  Once in a lifetime and unfortunately not something I could likely repeat if I had 100k rounds to try.

Went to the range Sunday to shoot the printed quarters.  Rifle was a Bushmaster XM-15E2S with 20" barrel (1:9 twist), ammo was 55 gr. PMC Bronze (pretty sure flat-based, not boat-tailed, can get exact SKU later) .223 Remington.

Used a 100-yard shooting tunnel to minimize wind influence (it was SUPER windy that day).

Yeah...didn't go too well.

One thing: my scope only goes up to 4.5x.  This is woefully inadequate to see anything more than a slightly bumpy line at 100 yards.

thing two: Scope wasn't zeroed at 100 yards.  Got it there by the end of the session though.

Takeaway: I need a better scope.  Not only magnification-wise, but with a bigger objective (20mm was not enough) and better optics quality (the chromatic aberration was almost physically painful).

Looking at the Nikon M223 series.

Here’s a simple exercise that you can conduct to assess the consistency of the overall performance of your AR-15, ammunition, scope and zero.  You will need to down-load one of the 100-yard targets (in .pdf format) that are pictured below, from the links at the end of this article (whichever target you prefer.)

https://app.box.com/shared/static/xwn2opb1s8t3rp9hxo4sem7qb2dsu2y9.jpg

https://app.box.com/shared/static/i1lxn802604d30pyuj02xp4h614ac4qy.jpg

As you can see in the pic above, the targets consist of the images of ten U.S. quarters in a row (or two rows of five quarters), on an 8.5” x 11” piece of paper.  The nominal diameter of a U.S. quarter is 0.955”; in other words, it is a sub-minute of angle target at a distance of 100 yards.

Post the target at a distance of 100 yards from your shooting point.  Shooting from any position that you choose, with or without any support that you want, fire one shot and one shot only, at each of the ten “quarters” on the target.  In order to score a “hit” on an individual quarter, the center of your bullet-impact must break the outline of the quarter.

The quarters should be shot at in consecutive order (left to right or right to left) in order to more easily keep track of any “collateral damage” (hitting one quarter when you were actually aiming at another.)  Take as much time as you like in-between each shot, but at the end of the exercise you can only have ten bullet holes on the target.

As an example, the target pictured below was shot from the bench using one of my Krieger barreled AR-15s with match-grade hand-loads.

https://app.box.com/shared/static/3zi4kw2n5qokx2fbiqvtm530u9katm0a.jpg

Is the performance of your AR-15, ammunition, scope and zero consistent enough to make a single shot on a sub-minute of angle target 100% of the time; ten out of ten attempts?  90% of the time; 9 out of 10 attempts?  50% of the time; 5 out of 10 attempts?  Down-load the target and find out!

Had a look at both target types thus far posted (quarters touching and quarters spaced out) at 100 yards through a 3-9x variable power scope today.

Unless the hit on the 4th quarter, is actually collateral damage from your shot at the 5th quarter, I don't think your results were due to luck.  One way to be sure; repeat the exercise, but use the target with two rows of quarters.

...

I'm fairly confident I remember aiming at the 4th quarter for my 5th shot. It was a strange feeling shooting at a different target for each shot. I skipped the 5th one and continued on.

Also on the first shot I wasn't sure where exactly I needed to aim. My first 3 shots were at 50 yards and I was around 1/4" low if I remember, so I jumped straight to the 100 yard quarters and over estimated and held too high.

After the quarters I shot a 5 round group at 100 which unfortunately I didn't get a picture of. I should have shot that first so I knew where my zero was. Lessons learned

FWIW and YMMV.... try sorting your Fed. 50gr Tipped Varmint by weight.... I just got done separating 800rds into 5 weight groups.

It "seems" to help eliminate those fliers.

The lightest loaded round was 170.9 grains total weight v. the heaviest being 174.4grs total weight.

I just did it last week.... but it was so rainy and windy..... that I realized I was wasting ammo trying to shoot the challenge.

It was great practice and educational.... but, to many variables at play. for that matter one quarter I fired at 4 times and the shots all were off the quarter, towards 5 o'clock every shot.

And Molon is correct... The target with two rows of quarters is "easier" to focus on.

I tried again this weekend....

20" BCM SS FF.... I can say.... I now know how this barrel acts when it starts to heat up.... it moves towards the 10:00 position... then down towards the 4:00 position.... Lol .... not by much, 3/4 moa, but enough that it is noticeable.

Also I need to find a way to cover the Keymod rail with something slick..... I swear it would catch / snag on something, on one of the quarters and consistently pull that one shoot.... including any "Well I flubbed that... may as well try again" shot.

This is a great way to learn to shoot better.

I cant wait to get my build done and try this.

How much time are you allowing between shots?

have you found it is more forgiving with a 223 then a 308? or does the larger heavier bullet stay more consistent?

and after seeing those 2 vids.
Note to Self: dont buy a Borbro!

Just remember that the center of your bullet hole must break the outline of the quarter in order to count as a hit.

A Larue SPR mount I had a long time ago would do that. Thankfully the lever nut could be tightened to stop the movement (although it was no longer QD at that point). Larue sent me a new one and the new one was fine.

Related to that, it taught me that when mounting anything, I always place the lug as far forward in the picatinny slot as possible before tightening. That way, under recoil, there is no where for the mount to go even if it wasn't torqued properly(lights, optics, etc.).
