I have a Bushmaster rifle that I have owned for several years that has never shot that well and I thought about selling it.
But first I decided to install a free float tube to see if that would help A friend also suggested trying a different BCG in the gun. I took the gun out yesterday to give it a try. I shot about 20 rounds through the gun. The free float tube seemed to maybe help a little. I then swapped out the BCG from an Olympic Arms AR that I also have. That also seem to tighten the groups up a little. Seeing how it seemed to improve the gun a little, I decided to leave the Oly BCG in the Bushmaster and just drop the old Bushmaster BCG into the Oly. I tried to install the BCG into the Oly but the gun will not close into full battery. I tried pushing on the bolt to get the gun to close but it would not close all the way.......when I pulled on the charging handle to remove the bolt it was quite jammed and took some hitting to get it open. What is the problem?? Are the bolts different ? I pretty much though you could buy a new BCG and drop it into any gun ?? |

I've always been told that swapping a used BCG into a used rifle was a no no. A new BCG into a used rifle or new rifle or new rifle and used BCG is OK.
Either way, how does the BCG have an effect on accuracy? As mentioned above the AIM units are GTG and not expensive. |

The bcg has zero effect on accuracy. Since you have already addressed the rail issue, start looking at the barrel and optics.
I don't know.....but was told some time a bolt can be a little out of square or out of spec and could affect accuracy??? And was recommended to try a different BCG. |

Bolts can definitely affect group size.
Armalite shortens the lug opposite the extractor so that it is out of play. The bolt lugs are not loaded symmetrically and the mod evens it out some. Changing bolts can change headspace which in effect changes the distance a bullet jumps to the rifling. |

How old is the Bushmaster Rifle? I mean is it an OLD Bushmaster made when Bushmaster was an Independent Gun Manufacturer based in ME, before it was purchased by Remington, or a Bushmaster manufactured by Remington?
Does it have a heavy barrel? If so, adding a free-float handguard is not going to make much/any difference in accuracy (or POI) especially if you do not use a sling with high tension. Does not sound like you have fired that many round through the gun. Could it be suffering from lack of break in? The bolts should be functional compatible, even if they are cosmetically different (are they both semi-auto bolt carriers, shrouded or unshrouded?), and theoretically you should be able to swap them back and forth without any problems. If you want to replace the BCG, the PSA Premium BCG has been on sale recently for $69. I've been using a couple of these in my circa 1995 Bushmaster ARs for 2-3 years now with good results.. |
