I was reviewing the following function check:
http://www.ar15.com/content/guides/functionCheck

for semi-auto.....

"SEMI
1. Place the selector on SEMI. Pull the trigger and hold to the rear. . The hammer should fall. "
2.  The hammer should fall.
3. Continue to hold the trigger to the rear, pull the charging handle to the rear, and release it, Release the trigger with a slow, smooth motion until the trigger is fully forward. The hammer should not fall.
4. Pull the trigger. The hammer should fall.

I performed steps 1 and 2 fine.  While performing step 3, while releasing the trigger very slowly I heard/felt the trigger do "something".  I thought it was the hammer falling but it didn't really sound like it.  I decided to then do step 4 and pulled the trigger and the hammer did fully release and fall.

I have a new ALG Defense ACT trigger installed.  Can someone tell me what I heard and felt at the end of step 3??  Was it just the trigger resetting?

In the army, we usually say 'I hear the click' as we let the hammer fall to the next sear.

Same applies to most other semi auto's as well, to include handguns pistols.

It's easier to see what's happening in a function check when you function check the lower by itself.

Take the upper off the gun.

With your finger off the trigger, manually cock the hammer.  With LIGHT finger pressure to keep the hammer from slamming forward, squeeze the trigger - the hammer should "fall" onto your fingers.

Now, with the trigger still fully pressed, manually cock the hammer - the hammer should stay cocked.

Now, again controlling the hammer, gently release the trigger.  At some point before the trigger is fully forward, you will feel and hear a "click," and the hammer will move forward JUST A LITTLE.  This is the point that the hammer transfers from the disconnector to the trigger.

When you manually cock the hammer, you shouldn't feel any real resistance, whether it's with the hammer forward or with it pulled.  If you feel the hammer "running into something" when manually cocking it while the trigger is pulled, that could indicate interference between the hammer and the disconnector.  That's a Bad Thing.

Excellent!  Although I believe my trigger to be functioning fine, I will give the above a go.  I would like to see how it functions. Thanx.

Just be careful about letting the hammer slam forward.  You can break the mag catch and/or crack the magwell if the hammer gets away from you.
