Hello All,

I got an AR 15 in a trade, and the previous owner got it from someone who built it, so he did not have much detail besides the visible outside markings. I would like to identify some of the components.

I can identify:
Lower - Spike's Honey Badger
Grip - looks like Palmetto, no marks
Lower parts kit - generic(possibly Palmetto) with JP Spring kit
Upper - Palmetto
Stock - A2 with rifle length buffer, tube and spring.

What I would like some help on: quadrail and barrel. Got a 15" free float quad rail, fixed rails and a 20" barrel. Its a heavy barrel, "stepping down" for the low profile gas block, and it has two circular marks - one about an inch from the muzzle and one about an inch from the gas block. No other visible markings - no brand, no chamber, no twist.
Previous owner said it came with a big scope, used as a varmint gun, but he kept the scope when trading.

I am reasonably confident that it's a 5.56 chamber, as I have not seem any aftermarket 20" .223 barrels, but better safe than sorry.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

To identify the barrel (or at least the chamber/twist), use a flashlight and look really hard through the holes in the rail, or just pull it off. I have to imagine that there are markings on that barrel somewhere. I can't really see a barrel leaving a manufacturer without any markings on it.

Probably not an FN made barrel, mine is marked past the front site. There's markings somewhere on there. What did you trade op?

It appears to be this handguards.

As others said the barrel should be marked somewhere under the handguard.

I inspected the barrel under the handguard several times with a high powered flashlight - no marks as far as I can see.

I thought it was the on off ebay, but there are 4 drilled holes on the muzzle end of the rail - and none of the ebay ones have those.

I traded a project Glock with several upgrades. :D Thought it was about time I got an AR!

Cheers!

Found one that had monstrom as the brand that has the four holes. Looks like your rail.

So there's no markings on the barrel at all? No "5.56 1/7 nato" or something similar along those lines? It's just completely blank?

Nice boom stick either way, enjoy...........

That Monstrum one looks about right - and I can order an end cap from them separately! Thank you!

The barrel is completely unmarked, like not even a logo or anything. Just the matte gray finish.

And oh yeah - going to the range to verify/sight it in this weekend!

Cheers!

I'm very surprised to hear that the barrel has no markings of any kind. How on earth could a manufacturer let a barrel leave the factory without at least the most basic chamber and twist info stamped on it?

Good luck at the range. Glad it wasn't sold to you as a 300 black out...because an unmarked barrel isn't something that I would want to "verify" at the range.

Not my area of expertise at all, but is this something a decent gunsmith can inspect and verify on the barrel for exact caliber and twist with some of their "magic" tools?  Seems odd and perhaps some liability attached for a barrel manufacturer not to stamp the barrel with vital stats.  Another question...when a heavy barrel is turned down and a critical stamping is removed in the process, don't they restamp the barrel?  Never had any barrel work done...just curious.

I've never had a barrel re-profiled either, but I imagine that any reputable shop would re-stamp the barrel for chamber and twist. Maybe an ADCO customer will chime in. I have to believe that a gunsmith would be able to verify chamber, not sure about twist. Twist might be "best guess" but I don't know for sure.

I doubt this helps but for the record, I purchased a couple of affordable barrels (16") from SG a couple years ago that were unmarked.  Advertisement stated that they were 5.56 1in9 manufactured by Mossberg.

Might be a starting point?

Ah, i meant the sights - I don't know if its properly sighted in!
It's a 5.56 or .223 for sure, and based on the barrel profile, I am leaning towards 5.56 - but I want to verify. .223 is definitely safe to fire, so I can take it to the range to see how it runs. If a gunsmith can verify for sure, I'll get a hold of one locally - I wasn't sure if it was possible.

I have seen a few posts on here and other forums where people would get completely unmarked barrels - don't know how they end up that way, but they do. Was hoping that someone might have seen a similar one somewhere. I'll look up the Mossberg ones to see if they made one of this finish and profile.

Cheers!

Isn't DPMS known for not marking their barrels?

I seem to recall that Armalite doesn't mark their barrels either. It's not common, but it's hardly a rare practice...
