Hello all. I'm looking at getting into the AR market and have narrowed down to three options I believe.

KAC SR-15e3 Mod1
Rainier Arms RUC MOD2
Build my own with a $1700 budget

My optics money is not in this budget. This will be used for the range, hopefully competition and maybe even some hunting. I would like to go with a 16" barrel. Thank you in advance. I've read a lot, but need some seasoned help.

If a KAC is an option then go with the SR-15, or a Larue

I like to build my own, an AR15 outfitted the way I like cost around $800-$1000 bucks. Yes I could spend more but there is really no reason for it, I could spend the money saved  on ammo or a can.

For real though , both of the options you have picked are kick ass AR15s, I mean , you cant really go wrong with either

KAC all the way.

They can be had lots of places, but boltcarrier.com and Lawmen's and Shooters supply are the 2 top dealers

,IMO. Lawmen's is right down the street from KAC and Ayan at boltcarrier is a top notch guy and KAC licensed armorer.

Thank you for the info so far. I have found a couple of SR15's almost new for around $1500-1600.00. I hear that is a great price for those rifles.

That's a pretty good budget, i'd have some fun with that. However unless you want to spend $500 on a an upper and lower I think you can get away with spending less. You can find a nice set of light upper and lower, this company makes light nice uppers and lowers

http://www.magtacticalsystems.com/index.php/2013-07-29-03-32-34/2013-08-01-17-32-25/product/10-black-lower

I would go with BCM barrel, bolt, keymod rail ect. (then again I am a weight savings nut.) You can get an ALG trigger which are nice or you may be able squeeze a nicer trigger into your budget. I guess its going to really come down to what you want to build. A pistol to later be SBR'd, or 14.5" with pin and weld, standard 16", or long range with bi pod.. So once you figure that out you have a LOT of options that will fit into your budget. Then from there you can decide on which optic fits your build purpose.

Remember ounces are pounds and pounds are pain.

KAC.  But, before you choose, note that there are some nice Daniel Defense rifles in that price range at street pricing.

I'd pick your 3rd option of building your own.

First the rules would have to be that all parts are interchangeable with other AR15's, and everything tier 1.

I'd be looking at a nitride barrel, crekote, nickel boron BCG, better trigger, possibly M-LOK.

There would also be other stuff I'm not sure about and experimenting with, and would most likely be swapping.

So in the end I'd end up with something customized anyways.

If you have the money for a KAC that is the way you should go.
Otherwise BCM Spikes Daniel Defense are a few great options.

Thank you everyone. I took the plunge on a KAC SR15E3 Mod 1 for an unbelievable price.  I had everything picked out for custom and this fell into my lap. Thank you again and I think BRD has infected me already.
