| Hi guys, I am in the market for a new out of the box AR in 223/5.56. I have roughly $1200 (800 of which is grift cards to Gander Mount) max I can use for this purchase not including ammo and such. So what are your thoughts and suggestion? Thanks in advance |

Thanks in advance Gander Mountain prices are pretty high in comparison to other places I have bought guns/parts/equipment from. But if you have to use the gift cards there and cannot get money refunded for them, I'm sure you will be able to pick up a more than adequate rifle for $1,200. I'm not sure what kind of inventory they stock as I never went back into their store after I saw their prices. Good luck...you should get some responses shortly. ETA: I checked their online catalog and DAMN...their prices are high. I'd probably do this one and have $$$ left for ammo and spare mags: http://www.gandermountain.com/modperl/product/details.cgi?pdesc=Del-ton-DT-Sport-Centerfire-Rifle&i=721345 |

If I was in your shoes, I would build my own rifle with the 400 and add a little of my own money. take the 800 in gift cards and buy a safe on sale, a nice pair of boots, some fishing gear and pick up something for my wife. |

10% OFF with Code: NEWYEAR
Gander Mountain prices are ridiculously high, easily 30%-40%+ higher than market price. e.g. GM's Bushmaster A3 Patrolman Carbine $1299 before coupon http://www.gandermountain.com/modperl/product/details.cgi?pdesc=Bushmaster-A3-Patrolmans-Carbine-Centerfire-Rifle&i=722019 Same gun at CDNN $699.99 http://www.cdnnsports.com/bushmaster-m4a3-patrol-223.html#.VLByArs5DL8 |

If you can get 80% of their value, I'd sell the gift cards. There are tons of rifles at your price point, but you'll get more value for money somewhere else.
If your budget includes optics, I'd get a PSA premium M4 around $500-600, and get a used ACOG around $600. |

Building one is definitely the way to go (I build all my AR's now)...but I was trying to stay within the OP's parameters. If he feels he HAS to use his gift cards at Gander Mountain in order to buy his rifle, I was just giving him a decent option for that (and believe me, there wasn't very many decent options with GM's prices). Years back I was about to to the same thing. Fortunately I mentioned it to a buddy at work who is an AR guru. He steered me into building one with mostly Spikes hardware. I now have better furniture, triggers and groups for the same or better price than an off the shelf GM gun. In hiindsight, it am much happier and have much higher quality rifles at a lower cost than buying a Del-ton off the shelf. Years later, Ive now caught the bug and may need an intervention......or an addition to store safes and reloading equipment. .....or a divorce |
| OP...do you have any aversion to building your own? If you can read any type of instruction manual and have even mediocre dexterity you can build your own AR. You will also benefit from the satisfaction of "I built it" and will know the gun inside and out.....there is a lot to be said for that. |

Quoted: Most online places are willing to give $592 for an $800 card. you are probably better off making a deal at Gander mountain. See that store manager and let him know what you are doing and why. He will appreciate the feedback. |

Wow, I took a gander at Gander's prices and I only can think of two words: RIP OFF!
By the way, cashing in the cards and losing over $200 looks the same as buying $200 over retail. As mentioned use the cards for other purchases and use the cash to build one or buy one elsewhere. |
