[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Newbie Charging Handle Question

Hello all, first post here on AR15.com. I am very new to AR's (never actually shot one yet) and jumping in to build my first. I am looking into charging handles right now. The price range is pretty varied. Could some of you explain to me the importance level of the charging handle and whether or not it is something I need to throw additional money at?

OEM charging handles work just fine. But BCM or Raptor is lightyears smoother/easier to operate, esp in a high stress situation. I recommend BCM Mod 44 (ambi)
Or the Raptor.

FPNI but stick with the stock handle until you have run some rounds through your rifle.

Another vote for the Raptor here. I have one on my Windham and just ordered another for the Spike's.

If you are on a budget just stay with standard version. That is what I am doing. Money can be spent better with different areas.

Had regular for a long time, went with a BCM large handle and switched it to my other AR when I got a Raptor.

OEM < BCM GUNFIGHTER < RAPTOR

I have not had a chance to see the ambi BCM

Fortis is another good option. Price point is between BCM and Raptor and I have found it to be a solid CH.

If you get the chance, handle a few different AR setups to see what you might like and/or want.

As for Charging Handles...

I've had BCM, PRI, Standard, and Raptor.

The RAPTOR beats them ALL.

All my AR's have the standard one except for my tacticool one and that has a bcm one, most of mine are retro or basic ar clones

Another vote for the Raptor, I run them in all my ARs except for the one BCM upper that I have. In that rifle, I run a BCM Ambi- just to keep the rifle all BCM
