Got in the woa 12.5, and decided to mock up the upper. Plan on getting a 1.93 mount for the vortex.

Nice!

I ordered a PSA 12" grendel barrel and BCG, not sure if it'll arrive before we leave for EDC but regardless, it will be replacing my 13.7 inch 5.56 barrel build. I couldn't keep the muzzle device pinned (weld kept breaking when i tried to remove the suppressor) so since i have plenty of 5.56 builds of various flavors, while it's fun, it's time to repurpose.

Thinking ALG 10", as the 12" may be a hair too long.

@ProfessorHorseyhead ALG clearance rails are back in stock. Last I checked, the V2 Keymod 10" is in stock. There's always the V0-E if you just want a good, cheap, bare bones handguard. I'm trying to have 3 more rifles done before the end of the year (1 for each of my children) and I'm going to try to snag some of the V2X's in 12" for the 13.7" barreled uppers I'm planning for them. I have builds that need optics, but family first It'll be nice for each child to get a mini recce for their 18th birthday. Fingers crossed for my boys to be mature enough by then.

Just asking again. Does anyone have any insight on how to make a aem5 work on a 12.5 ballistic advantage barrel?

@FDEKnight had a set up like that.

Off the top of my head it was a custom collar setup from Ron Allen and a 9.5in rail like a Geissele.

@TigerHawk

Call Ron and have him make an m4 to aem5 adapter.  He'll need three dimensions off your barrel.  It used to be a stocked item until barrel makers started going all over the place with the dimensions on the first step.  He will charge you around $40 for it.

This is a BA 12.5 w/ aem5

Thanks for that info. That’s about what I was expecting. Looking at pictures of the ba 12.5 online the step in the barrel looks pretty small. Wasn’t sure it was enough to index a collar on.

I have a few of their barrels; the interior of their cheap ones looks absurd (but shoots well, go figure), and the interior of the nicer series looks good and shoots good.

Worst case, you end up with a spare blasting barrel.

Edited to add: the step on my BA barrel that has one will not fit any off the shelf AE collar.   Their barrels that are advertised as being SPR profile/can compatible should be OK, but in general steps on some M4 profile barrels and on just about any other barrel profile are all over the place.

Most of the non-M4 / SPR profile steps are just a cosmetic copy of the step you will find on a legit 20" A2 barrel.

Well that sucks. The only reason I bought their 12.5" was because I was under the impression I could slap on a M4 collar and the AEM 3 would fit without smithing. Fingers crossed I guess

You can probably have AE make one of the "no step" collars if needed; what I ended up doing for my 12.5 setup was using a Spike's one-piece mount.

Very nice rifles here.

Put this upper together several nights ago, but it'll eventually go on a lower I built for a pistol.

Until then, it's on my registered lower.

Not sure what kind of optic to put on it. I've always used non magnified for 12.5 and under. This is 10.5... but I'm really wanting to go with a 1-6. Is that too much, you guys think?

On a 10.5", Aimpoint for sure.
A 3X will allow you to make any shot you could possibly be contemplating on a 10.5".
A 1-4 would be overkill, and 6X is totally unrealistic.
Shoot in the dark with a Aimpoint and then the 1-6 in a room to room clearing  or home defense situation.

Beautiful rifle for sure, fantastic job.

Guys on ODA's overseas are running LPVO's on MK18's and M4A1's.

Go here.

A 1-6 would be fine on your 10.5 provided you have the data available to take advantage of the extra magnification.

Looking through this thread makes my head spin--so many great builds.  What barrel would be your recommendation for someone building a mini Recce?  I'm looking for 11.5 to 12.5," as accurate as possible, and will be suppressed. I'd prefer black, and not shiny SS.

Thanks
