I have a barrel w/ a 5.56 chamber and a buddy lent me a set of guages but they are for 223. One is a field gauge (1.4736") The other is 1.4646". Should the bolt close on both or should it only close on the short one?

Your bolt should not close on a field guage, it's maximum headspace and consider unsafe. Red is no go. Green is go. Your 1.4646 should be a go guage.

The bold SHOULD close on a "GO" gauge and SHOULD NOT close on a "NO GO" gauge.
