Been lurking for a bit, popping back and forth between the forums.  I have been Handloading cartridges for my pistols and got bit by the bug.  so just to get my paws on one at a low price point to play with, I order one from PSA.

http://palmettostatearmory.com/index.php/firearms/rifles/palmetto-state-armory/psa-16-stainless-mid-length-1-7-freedom-carbine.html

I know it's not a DD or a Colt but for paper plinking and for an introduction to the EBR curse, is this a decent one?  i know it needs optics.  Just making sure it's not totally detestable.  for ~556 with shipping included, I'm hoping to have a good paper puncher for 100 yards use.

Just looking for some feedback
Thank you

I just bought this same rifle and took it to the range for the first time yesterday. I added a rear MBUS backup sight as well. The rifle fired with no issues and was pretty accurate with the iron sights. This was my first AR as well, so I have nothing to compare it to, but I am pleased thus far for the money.

You'll be fine.  Buy ammo, post groups.  Welcome to ARFCOM.

Sounds good...thanks for the feedback.  Just wanted an inexpensive way to see if I truly like the AR platform.

ROFL.  My dear sir, if you do not like expense, take your rifle into the yard with an axe immediately, and chop it to pieces.  That will be the least expensive decision regarding the AR platform you will ever make.  For no one truly likes the AR platform as it IS - and so we make all manner of improvements on it; and just when we think our rifle is complete, some one invents an improvement that we MUST have.  Sooner or later, your rifle will begin to reproduce asexually, and you will acquire a 2nd upper; and then you might as well get another lower for it; and then a pistol lower; and then you will stumble onto a near mint Retro upper; and then you must have a proper lower for that...

LMAO...So you are telling me that it will become an endeavor like W. German Sig Classic Pistols and Handloading Equipment
more more more more

But like my Big Green 700, I want to make sure it's a platform I enjoy and not like my Glock, H&K, and a few other experiments where I just didn't like something and got away from them.
Either I like it and keep paying to play or it will end up in the tried it and sold it category.

I've ordered a few things from PSA and have yet to be disappointed with anything I've received from them.

The Freedom line of rifles (I believe) is meant to appeal to the guy on a budget, but then everything PSA sells is on a budget style price point, and their quality is very good.  The SS barrel will probably make for an accurate rifle.  Some might chime in to tell you to look for a CM barrel that is chrome lined, but it's really personal preference.

I say go for it.

Thanks for the feedback.  I'm not expecting this to be a tier 1 or even tier 2 rifle.  A paper plinker at 50 yards out to 100 yards to see if I like the platform is all.  New to the platform completely other than firing some other ARs from fellow shooters.  More of a trial or learning experience is what I am chalking it up to.

Good starter rifle, you can always swap the barrel in the future.

That's kinda the reasoning behind trying out the platform and not diving in right off the bat.  I'm being pragmatic in my approach this time instead of diving in whole hog and ending up with 3K invested and not liking the product.

Thanks

That's possibly the best deal going for a plinker right now. Buy it. Don't spring for optics yet (unless you have something lying around), put a cheap flip-up rear sight on it. Shoot it with at least several types of ammo (69-77gr should be best for that barrel) and see if you like the platform and cartridge. If you do and want to upgrade, sell that one (you'll get your money back) and build what you want either from scratch or from assembled kits depending on your budget/needs/ability. Buying a full rifle and upgrading is always more expensive than building.

Spend the time here and at the range talking to other people about their rigs to get a better idea of what you want. Then make a plan and go all in.

However, you need to seriously analyse your goals. If all you want is a rifle to poke holes in paper with enough accuracy to hit a beer can at 100 yards, save yourself a bunch of money and buy a stainless barreled Ruger 10/22. Any of them will accomplish that and, with proper ammo selection, many of them are capable of truly astonishing accuracy. This probably doesn't apply to you though since you're interested in taking an EBR course. I don't imagine the instructors would be amused if you showed up with a squirrel gun, even if it could outshoot nearly everything else on the firing line.
