Thanks for all the advice to go with White Oak.
Now, I see the "varmint" rifles have no threading for a muzzle device, (flash hider, etc), whereas the other barrels do.
Is a muzzle device needed?
Comparing between the 18" Varmint and 18" SPR.
Again, I'm building for 200-300yd accuracy.

For punching paper I say no, but for hunting I would prefer a comp for faster follow up shots, and good flash reduction.

Personally, I would bother with one, although I'm sure others would/will disagree.

Not running one on my 20" WOA upper........don't notice any significant muzzle rise (as to be expected with a longer barrel).

Some people will tell you that you need one because of TEOTWAWKI or some other pipe dream.

I'd bother with one because I like the option of mounting a can, but it's not really necessary.

That's about what I thought.
I know it's needed for short barrels, to get to the 16" legal minimum, but didn't think it would have any special civilian need on a longer barrel.

Needed no … desirable? Hell yes. YMMV
Brakes/comps can help keep the sights on target.
Flash suppressors have an obvious utility after dark.
My 5.56mm 24” barrel varmint rifle came threaded and I attached a brake.
