If I wanted to change / extend the barrel length on a S&W Magpul MOE 16" I would have to change the gas tube as well. I assume yes but I'm not sure what else has to happen. I assume I can reuse my front post sight.
Or is this impossible or way to complicated? Rr |

If you are talking just putting on a long muzzle device you should consider putting on one that would not increase back pressure on your gas system.
Like the flash hider on the original XM177E2 (CAR 15), basically a long tube that extended the 10.5" barrel out to about 15". That did not even work well as a flash hider so I don't know what the point is on that. If you are changing your barrel to a 20" yes it would be good to use a rifle length gas tube. Then you have to change the hand guard system also. Might be better to build / buy a different upper. |

Can't really add length to an existing barrel. You replace the muzzle device for a longer one.
The other option is to replace the barrel completely. Your 16" barrel uses a carbine length gas tube. It's not common to find 18-20" barrels with a carbine gas but they are out there. Chances are you'll have to replace the gas tube with a mid-length or rifle depending on barrel. Also you cannot reuse your front sight post as barrel and sight are mated. You'll have replace those as well. |

If you buy a new, longer barrel it will tell you what the gas system length is. I'm not aware of any readily available barrels that are carbine gas systems but more than 16" so short answer is yes, you'll need a new gas tube.
As far as your front sight base goes, it is possibly reusable to a certain extent. During manufacturing, the FSB is placed on a barrel and then it is drilled for the taper pins (meaning the drill but cuts a hole through the FSB and into the barrel and out the other side of the FSB). So, because they are a matched pair during drilling, you could not take the FSB off of your rifle and swap it with your friend's identical rifle. They could have literally been made moments apart, but the pins will not match up. So you'd have to send your new barrel and your old FSB off to someone like ADCO and see if they could do it for you. But you'd probably be left with empty or oblong holes in your FSB. |

Lance, It is a mid length gas system. it seems a new post front sight, gas tube and barrel. Close to a new rifle. Thanks |

It will be cheaper and easier to buy a new complete barrel or upper assembly. If you try and reuse your front sight base/gas block, you will need a gunsmith to do it. If you buy a stripped barrel, you'll need a gunsmith to mount the new front sight base/gas block to the barrel. By the time you add shipping and shop fees, its not cheap.
