It was actually .74 oz. I don’t have any pictures of the process but I do remember burning through a few before I was able to get a good one.

I actually found your previous posts on page 45-47 and you showed where you got it down to 1oz...but full length AND just 0.74 is NUTS!! i KNEW there must be a good little bit of weight in the thicker areas at the front and back of the grip and where it tapers a bit inside when i measured with ID mics...but i REALLY didnt think another 0.38oz was possible off something that for me for a long time was already only 1.12oz.....especially considering mine is trimmed shorter where i can just fit 4 fingers comfortably with some extra for gloves!

0.74oz without side holes drilled through the grip, and full length makes me think 0.7oz should be easy with it trimmed.........do you still have one? if so could you get pics of it for me off the gun?

If SBRs become more common that will be kind of a game-changer. Even going from a 16" barrel to a 12.5" barrel is substantial weight savings.

My ultra light weight was going to be an SBR but the feds lost my app and I got pissed and canceled.
It would have been under 3 lbs with optic as an SBR.

That’s exactly what I did. I used a Faxon 10.5 pencil barrel and had parts of it turned down for even more weight savings.
I made an aluminum extension and pinned/welded it to make it legal. I’ll definitely be filing to make it an SBR after January 1.

You have a weight of the parts separated?

Who did the turning down?

I’m really curious now and also how reliable it is.

The stock barrel weight is 14.4 oz. After turning it was 13.7 oz. Not a huge difference but I was looking for every little bit I could get. My goal was to be at or under 3 lbs with optic as an SBR.

John at Retro Arms did the turning.

It has been surprisingly reliable. Admittedly I’ve probably only run a thousand or so rounds through it at this point but it has been flawless. I do clean after every use though.

Where was the material removed from? On a pencil barrel there's not much at all to take off.

With SBRs becoming easier / cheaper, I should probably start putting shorter barrels on the list. 10.5" and 11.5"?

I am also working on a 5.56 upper for the same lower, but it will probably be 4 lbs, 12 oz

Glad to see manufacturers are still interested in lighter weight products. I forget what the Fostech receivers weigh, I think these are close.
I have a Fostech upper on my ULW and a lower laying in my toolbox I need to find a home for.

I just bought a Roam AR-15 upper. Now just waiting for it to arrive so I can try it out.

I would have preferred a version with no FA like they do for their AR-10 upper, but still very light.
10/17/2025 5:08:55 PM EDT
[Last Edit: prinkeps][Edited] [#22]
So I got my Roam R-15 upper.

Advertised weight was 5.8oz with the FA and dust cover installed.
My weight was 167.92g (5.92oz)

Stripping the FA and dust cover advertised upper weight is 4.3oz.
My Weight was 124.18g (4.38oz)

Normally converting to a slick side will reduce the weight by ~17% from what I've seen on before/after weights.
However the shell deflector for the Roam Upper is a polymer insert so the reduction wouldn't be as significant.

Depending how the rest of my build goes, I may go for the FA delete option anyway to hit my goal.

Almost 12 year old thread and parts still being added and list still being used!!

Im still loving my ultralight, has gotten nothing but laughs and smiles from people who hold it. Still shoots 1.5 moa 5 shot groups with a pencil barrel using cheap PMC(which these faxon barrels all like) heres where it is currently. Sure wish i had gotten an Incognito Stock, and also a TYR titanium grip that i could mod before they went out of business

Sub 3.17lbs rifle only, sub 4.41lbs with full pmag 30, foregrip, red dot, and random amazon riser thats not even very light....

Also just built a 10/22 UltraLight recently thats right at 2.95lbs without a sight, or 3.46lbs with a bx25 empty mag and no sight yet. This one came in $50 cheaper than rugers  "10/22 Carbon" and weighs about 1/2lb less. I KNOW i could drop a few more ounces with a FireFly 2.0 bolt and some stock mods too.....

Heres both of the rifles together...

pencil 10.5 vs 16 pencil from faxon saves 5.033 oz alone, plus you save 0.13oz on carbine vs mid length gas tube. That shaves almost a 1/3rd of a pound off the front alone(which is 0.18oz MORE weight removed than an entire sand cut DSA BCG asssembly with TI firing pin/cam pin installed)

I think that Spike's 11.5" LW CHF/CL is the best at 18 oz. The 11.5" BCM ELW seems good too, but I haven't seen or weighed one in person. They claim 15.5 oz on their fluted variant, but seem to always be out of stock, so maybe vaporware?

best for weight or hard use? for weight the Faxon pencil 10.5 is only 14.3 oz, My Faxon pencil 16" is 19.383oz. I personally would hate to lose 5.5" on a 5.56 gun for only 1.38oz and reducing the velocity 300-400 FPS

HEADS UP ALSO....PSA has the 4.9oz Fostech Flite Upper for just $139.99(usually $250 bucks, and used to be the "Fighter Lite" when they redid from the Mag Tactical ones) in Tungsten coloration. Its the lightest upper in production other than Roam and ~45% the price

https://palmettostatearmory.com/fostech-flite-elite-ar-15-stripped-upper-receiver-tungsten-6880tun.html

Also SCOUTE arms brought back a 3d printed titanium grip, looks much improved where it mates to the receiver too! still crazy pricy at near $200 like the TYR ones used to be though!

Weight and durability. For an sbr or pistol, 11.5" is better than 10.5" and effective for 200 yds.

Check this out.....Guns and Ammo mag just posted a pic showing a (supposedly) 1lb 13.9oz AR15. Its listed as "the worlds lightest centerfire rifle"

Straightpull bolt action, 16" barrel, seems to be in .223 still....but even then im calling BS. Cant find the article if there is one, but i just dont see it, even bare without mag/reddot/suppressor. Its VERY VERY hard to get sub 3lbs, let alone another 1lb 2.1oz

Well, I grabbed several complete factory builds before my state's AWB. Also got a Xanthos in .308.

I'd like to see a superlite monolithic upper like the LMT MRP.
