As an aside while I wait for the Assaulter bipod, here's the rifle its going on. With optic and sling, it currently sits at 6.75lbs. It's at 7.6lbs with my can. With the bipod and the light I'm looking at, it should sit at about 7.3lbs unsuppressed, and 8.25lbs suppressed. All weights are unloaded.

Made lightweight choices with the build, but didn't set out to build a featherweight gun.
-16" Criterion Core with a 2A Armament gas block and BRT EZTune Gas tube. Capped off with a FCD 1215XE for my Nomad.
-Aero M4E1 upper w/o FA and a Smoke Composite 15" handguard with the top rail. A complete JP LMOS carrier with their enhanced bolt sits in it.
-Lower is a KP-15 with a hodgepodge of lower parts, but the buffer system is a carbine weight JP SCS.
-Optic is a Steiner T432. Was going to look into an ACOG, but I like having an adjustable diopter and LED illumination to a lesser degree, so the Steiner was an easy choice over the PA Microprisms that I normally go with just for the glass quality.

More options for lightweight builds:

1.32 oz Irregular Defense Special-K Grip $45
6.2 oz KAK low mass aluminum BCG $85

Also, you can remove the weights in a 3 oz carbine buffer, and save about 1.9 oz, which would make an empty car buffer weigh about 1.1 oz.

I know it's kinda cheat'n with a shorty (8" 300 BO build,) but it's worth posting. I'm not quite where I'll finally be as I'm swapping the G MK4 7" rail to a KAK 7.2" tomorrow. It should save some weight.

Anywho, at 6lb 4.9oz with my Rugged Obsidian 9 can in short mode, and an empty 20 round mag it's nice and light. Hoping the new KAK rail can offset my WML Streamlight TLR RM-1 light (not mounted right now.) But, everything else in place as it will be.

Thus far, I'm happy with it. JP LMOS BCG, KVP H2 tungsten powder buffer and JP spring. Steel SA Adj GB as well.

I know I could shave some weight by dumping the Scalarworks irons, but that's no gonna happen. They're so light and useful, they stay.

How well will a rifle function without weight in the buffer?

An empty buffer will function a lot like the Taccom ULW buffer system, so it should work with a properly tuned adjustable gas block.

A note from Taccom: “Although some customers have used our recoil system with aluminum and Ti carriers, we have not personally tested this and can not recommend the use of our recoil system’s with those carriers.”

However, an empty buffer without the weights acting like a deadblow may reduce reliability, but using an extra power buffer spring may help minimize reliability issues.

I am still piecing together my LW build but I plan on using a DSA Enhanced Low Mass Aluminum BCG, empty carbine buffer and Sprinco blue spring, tuned with an Aero Precision adjustable gas block.

For giggles, before the new KAK rail comes in. I hadn't weighed this without the can & mag. 5lb 8.1oz

Again, I know it's cheat'n with a shorty.
But it goes to show that if you're going NFA SBR, you can keep them fairly light without spending STUPID $$$ on uber-light parts. I certainly could make it lighter, but I'm very happy with it as is.

Still, not cheap. But I've only got 3 AR15 builds, all suppressed SBR's. I haven't owned any carbine length AR's in quite some time.

Should be a bit lighter here in a few days.. we shall see what KAK brings to the table..

Edit: Just to be clear, this is a purpose built 300 BO HD gun. Subs only with the existing can.

I seriously wonder how light you could go with a BCM ELW 11.5, low mass BCG, carbine buffer, and a BCM MCMR rail.

It would probably be around what yours weighs, maybe less.

I'm currently re-configuring my 11.3" 5.56 build. It was a ~8.75lb piggy. I should have it down under 7lbs (with the suppressor) after I'm done.

It's a WC 11.3" barrel that's fairly light (18.48oz) Problem is it's built on my Mega GTR-3H billet lower, that's not light. But, I'll live with it nonetheless.

Big reason for getting these at a reasonable weight is my age, and strength level. 5 years of chronic back and neck nerve pain has me rethinking all of my guns. They need to be light, or they just don't get used.

A quest for an old fart that needs all the help he can get!

Edit: Oh yeah, all my guns run low mass BCG's (JP LMOS.) I've had great success with them for quite some time.

Recent reconfiguration of my 11.3" 5.56 build to drop weight. It was ~ 8.5-8.7lbs with the YHM Turbo-K suppressor. Not a bad weight, but the older I get the lighter I like them..

I was inspired to do this after the 300 BO build came out nice and light. Plus.. Black Friday prices on what I needed. Perfect.

Now at 6lb 3oz without the can mounted, that adds ~ 11oz.

Measured with an empty 20rnd PMAG. This is built on my old trusty Mega GTR-3H billet SBR lower. This is the 2nd stripped lower I bought quite some time ago, it holds a special place for me. A tad heavy compared to forged, but overall this came out great.

I remember studying this thread a ton in 2017/18. Bought a bunch of parts back then and built a 5lb 10" iron sight gun, and added a bunch of specs to the PWD. Recently i finally improved on it and built a 16" AR for under 1k thats sub 4.8lbs with an empty pmag and red dot......

But my question is, after reading the FAQ section of the PWD about AR10 stuff.....Did anyone ever start a AR10/ar-308 Lightweight parts database like the Ar15 one? trying to build a sub 5.5lb one that isnt crazy expensive and trying to find anything truly light nowadays is tough. Especially with so many companies out of business or changing names since Breastrokers 2016-era threads makes it hard lol

I will say that making an SBR feels like cheating. Losing 4"+ of barrel length is a cheat code. It also brings the center of gravity back into the receiver in most cases. Awesome!

I think my LW SBR build is around 4lbs 3oz without any sights on it.

14.35oz on faxon 10.5 pencil, vs 19.383oz on the 16" pencil. Losing 5.033 oz out that far out is very nice for sure.

My build has taken a turn, ive calibrated my scale to be DEAD ON from 0.1 grams to 50 grams and then modded my Hogue 15* more, currently sitting at 1.12oz exactly. Looks super sloppy but i smacked it on the floor and from every angle by hand a few times and didnt break, and also cant break it by hand when its off the lower. PLus i have another already to make look much better next time. (pics below of said grip) That puts it 0.02 oz less than the $200 Smokes one, and only .22 more than the 3d printed skeletonized TYR grip that was 180 and went up to $240 before they quit making them.

Then my tax return came in and i ordered a few new parts. BAD LBG gas block, Taccom buffer, Smokes open short pull stock, Faxon pencil 16 instead of my 30 oz 16" mid weight barrel, Arson machine A hole muzzle brake, carbon handguard, and already had about the lightest everything else you can get including a Stitchclimber KMR barrel nut(out of production for years and thinking about selling) and custom carbon tube handguard that im getting a lighter version of now from KVP. Should be 3.15lbs now, or sub 3.6 with a Swampfox Sentinel red dot, empty pmag30(heavy compared to a 20rd alum mag), and KAG foregrip with a Faxon 16" barrel. I could lose 0.45 oz with a DSA bolt too but i already have a 3gun labs with a TI firing pin and cam pin thats only 5.64oz

I forgot to post up the final config for the 11.3" 5.56 build. I ended up going with a KAK rail on this one too, just a tad lighter over the Geissele MK8.

I'll have to reweigh it, but IIRC it's still sub 6lb 3oz without the can mounted. I'm happy with it no doubt.

Anyone interested in one of the original StitchClimber/BLP Aluminum KMR barrel nuts? I have one id like to move on the next gun nut. Up on the Equipment exchange now

Weighs 0.562 oz on my scale(accurate to +/- 1 grains) Has some very light finish wear on the threads from being taken on and off by hand a good few times. Outside has never had anything clamped on it, nor a tool tighten it.

I was gonna use it in 2018 but decided to go with a Brigand Arms handguard and nut so i removed it. Have been saving it for my current even lighter build the past 6 years but wont be using a rail with the KMR system anymore due to so many other options being lighter.

Welp i FINALLY finished my ultralight rifle after starting to order parts 6+ years ago, its now fully done minus the handguard which is shipped and on its weigh(Pun intended) It should come in at 3.17lbs for just the gun...or 3.672lbs with an empty PMAG, my Cyelee CAT red dot, Amazon 0.87" RDS Riser, and KAG handstop/foregrip...or 4.35lbs with full mag of pmc 55gr and all accessories.

BUT, ive also been busy the past few days on the PWD adding things.....also the User Data Submission( "The UDS") section was a MESS! So i took the initiative to start making it much easier to read/add data
1. Reorganized the UDS section into categories with defined areas
2. moved the category defining brackets for what info goes were to the correct spot since it wasnt followed previously due to being so jumbled together
3. added 119 new entries myself just from 6 companies, and a couple other individual ones
4. organized all entries by alphabetical order... or group of models, then alphabetical
5. fixed broken links/typos/duplicate entries from previous page that locked after 100 entries

Was shooting for sub 3.5lbs and sub $1250 and met my goal quite nicely at 1181 total and 3.17lbs! Pic of parts list/weights/etc are below. I weighed every single part INDIVIDUALLY minus some polymer bits from the LPK being together on my "Truweigh Classic 1000g" pocket scale.

This scale is very cheap and just so happens to be SUPER accurate within +/- 2 GRAINS (1 gram is 15.4324 grains) anywhere from 10 grains on up to 100 grams, and all the way up to 550 grams with my calibration weights/checking known weight items like quarters etc and matches the calibrated scales at work too. Impressive little thing tbh, and it allows YOU THE USER to calibrate it as well if it does get out of wack, which i havent had happen in 6 years and MANY MANY weigh ins!!

In other news...my lightweight AR sat till this weekend and somehow runs decent as is with the basic just the basic settings recommended by RCA on their key and PMC 55gr that these barrels are supposed to love. Didnt have much time to shoot so ill dial it in further but i love it so far. Under 4.6lbs with a sling and full mag of ammo with room to go lighter is excellent. When empty it feels like a toy even compared to my Nylon 66!

I don’t think it’s cheating, just a different category. We discussed having separate categories years ago but nothing came of it.
My ultra LW build started out as an SBR but they lost my application and I got pissed and canceled.
I ended up pinning and welding an aluminum extension on the barrel, now that’s a cheat!

My first range trip with the super duper LW ar15 did not go that well.

Fire and the round ejects but won't chamber a new round.

Sigh.

A) It's not getting enough gas and the gas block is not good.

B) the BCM barrel isn't putting enough gas back via too small of a gas port and it's not getting enough through the gas block.

The kicker is I have it pinned and welded so it's kind of hard to change gas blocks.

I've built many, many AR15s-never a problem. I guess it was due my turn.

It’s fixed!

Turns out when I had it assembled and p&w at RAW they assembled the upper wrong and the gas block was not center over the gas port. As a result the rifle was not getting enough gas so it wasn’t feeding right.

@backbencher Sorry, I missed this one. Yup, H2 buffer & JP LMOS carrier. I've got all my SBR's setup this way. 11.3" 5.56, 10.5" 5.56 & 8" 300BO.

I do, however run them all with SA adjustable gas blocks as well. Gives me the option to tune them just right. All run 100% suppressed. I have no desire to run them loud.

I don't know, it just works for me anyway..

BIG FIND...Was searching for the lightest 10/22 setup, turns out a company called Wiland made a 10.5oz, then an 8.8oz barrel, and more recently they now make a 5oz 16" barrel for the 10/22!!

BUT the point relating to this thread is.....I saw one of the builds happened to have a MDT carbon AR grip and he said itsa just 0.95oz!! Thats LESS than Breastrokers User weight for the TYR Titanium 3D printed grips that are long out of production

wish it were less than 140 bucks but still a cool option, and could probly trim another 0.2+ oz off the bottom, and more by drilling similar to my 1.088oz Hogue grip(especially since my hogue is 3.45in tall, these are 4.125")

I was able to get a Hogue down to .88 oz without altering its outward appearance but I’m not a big fan of the feel of it so I went with the Smoke at just over an ounce.
