Is it possible to remove the thumb nuts on a carry handle sight without damaging the threads? Or are they supposed to come off anyway?

it will destroy the "keeper threads" on the end

dont know what they are really called but they will strip the nut when removed

You can remove the staked portion of the threads and turn the thumbscrews off.
I don't know why you would want to but it can be done.

I usually do this to use smaller nuts on the sights. I turn the giant nut off, cut the threads back, dress the end of the threads for the new nut and blue them with cold blue. Then I use a black nylon lock nut on the shorter threads. Doesn't get hung on things anymore and looks much better. I buy the lock nuts in a package of 8 at a time. Send me a PM if you need a couple.

I bought a well-used carry handle off the EE to chop, and I was going to remove the thumb screw when I repainted it. The thumb screw on the portion that I cut off came off the threads easily. A previous user must have threaded it all the way off.
