I want to buy my first AR soon. I saw a new Colt at Wal - mart but it was around $1400. A S&W M&P can be bought around $700. For some reason though I can't seem to shake the feeling that I want the Colt. Is it worth the extra money or would I be better off getting the M&P and using the money saved for optics, ammo or other accessories?

The Colt is likely the SOCOM for that price. Both are fine ARs but have several differences that are there for the market they are targeting. Do you need a rail out of the box or a SOCOM barrel? Dust cover or forward assist? What's your purpose and use? Ultimatemately, both are reliable and will serve you well but are built for different needs.

Both are great guns but if you want a colt shop around if you don't need that rail or barrel right away.   You can pick up a colt at cabelas for $800 or $750 when on sale

Wal Mart usually had Colts for $1097 that is just the base model without the quad rail. IMO to be honest you have to ask yourself what you are going to be doing with the rifle. If it is a SHTF rifle or one that is going to be for home/self defense or you are going to take some training classes I would go with the Colt. Where as if you already have a weapon fro self defense and the AR is just going to be a range toy you take out 1-2 times a month for some casual target shooting the SW will do just fine.

I want it for a variety of reasons... Hunting, shtf rifle and just shooting out in the yard. I generally believe that you get what you pay for but I like to do some research before I spend that kind of money. I want American made and good quality. I don't have to have all the best features right away so long as I can upgrade later. I guess at this point I want a good AR that I can upgrade by and by unless the Colt is the best way to go to start with. I don't know much about the AR so I figured I would ask for advice here before making possibly a bad decision. I don't know that buying the Colt would possibly be a bad decision but I didn't really want to drop the $1497 right now if I can get a good quality rifle for less and upgrade later. I do believe it is the SOCOM.

Thanks!  I was hoping to get it sighted in and hunt with it tomorrow but that's a no go until I get some sort of scope mount.  I have picatinny mounts but they are too low and the score hits the rifle.

Will post pics this evening.  This morning I picked up a flat top riser rail which allowed me to mount the scope.  My sling from my NEF .223 fit so I just need to get it sighted in now and I will be set.
