Hey guys, I have a regular A2 birdcage on my Bushmaster. What do you thing about the birdcage, what other muzzle devices do you like, and has anyone used the Jerry Miculek Compensator... opinions?

This. I'm an A2 fan. I run one on a $3,000 rifle actually.

The Miculek comp is good but has a blast that nobody beside you can tolerate. It also kicks up dust when it is clocked correctly. I had one on a DPMS 308. It was hell taking a shot hunting without ear protection on. I took one shot once with a buddy beside me. he backed away from the bench and would not come near me afterward while shooting. It is brutally concussive. I happen to like the bird cage. It does a descent job at noise, flash, and muzzle rise. I have not used much else. Others will help soon enough.

If your just looking for something purty then Spikes Dynacomp or BCM Battlecomp are nice.  Rainier Arms XTC is nice and there is always the AAC 51T if your going to do a lil dipping in the NFA bucket.........A2 is tried and true tho so prolly just be best to stick with it......

This is just my opinion.....

Brakes are great for Competition rifles or scoped bench guns.  Examples would be the Miculek brake you mentioned as well as the new MI brake and the SJC titan.  FREAKING loud and very concussive.

Comps are a good compromise between noise and taming muzzle rise.  Good for comp guns or fast shooting drills.  Less flash suppression.  They are louder than a A2 and a more concussion but not as much as the brakes.  Examples would be the Griffin M4SD, battle comp, and Spike's Dyna comp.

Hybrid comps that have more flash suppression than a regular comp but less than a standard flash hider.  Usually have less muzzle rise and slightly less loud and concussive than a comp.  They will be louder than a standard FH.  Examples would b the the Bravo comp and the Spike's D2.

Flash hiders like the A2 or vortex.   More flash suppression with less noise and more muzzle rise.  Not enough muzzle rise to be a deal breaker.  Examples would be the as mentioned A2, Vortex, and a huge list of others like the Phantom series from YHM.  HUGE bonus for these is the cost is much less.

Me personally, I like the Ranier mini comp (which is basically a small brake) on my 18" SPR.  It shoots with little to no recoil but is VERY loud.  Not enough to scare people away at the benches though.  I use a Griffin M4SD on my 16" RECCE (also scoped) and it shoots soft and I can get back on target fast.  I have a Spike's Dynacomp on my 16 Dissy and it shoots well with less recoil.

What I consider to be my SHTF go to rifles use flash hiders.  I can shoot fast and keep tight enough groups with the right hold.  If funds are tight then run a A2 and use the cash for ammo and practice.  Getting behind the rifle and squaring up to it and finding the sweet spot for hold would be a bigger benefit than worrying about taming the muzzle rise.

I like trying things out and tweaking a rifle to run a certain way.  My 9yr old LOVES the RECCE due to the soft recoil.  My wife does as well.

What is the Spike's D2 you mention?

Best muzzle device is a silencer.

The new Dynacomp coming out from Spikes next month.  It's chock full of enhancements, and is affordable.  I love mine, and plan on swapping out most of my muzzle devices to them.

For a hunting rifle stick with the birdcage. I have used several different brakes for 3 Gun as well as plinking around. They do keep the gun from bouncing and allow for tighter/quicker double taps with less shooter effort. They are however loud as hell! A friend of mine has the JP Eliminator brake and his rifle feels like a .22 rimfire.

That looks great! Maybe I'll just throw an A2 on my new build until I can get my hands on a D2. Thanks for the video.

I like the A2 FH.
I don't need a device to decrease muzzle climb and the recoil of an AR chambered in 5.56 NATO is quite manageable.

If I shot 3 gun then maybe I'd feel differently.

Compensators and brakes are loud and shooters next to you on the firing line get pummeled.

I've shot next to a lot of brakes and comps (PWS, SF, BC, Griffin, AAC, etc.) and never really noticed much--they have more than A2s, but it's nothing crazy (and I don't think my electronic Peltors are anything special).  There are a lot of guys shooting some crazy loud guns (non-ARs) at that range--and it is outdoors, so that may help.   Also I've never stacked up and had people shooting within a foot or two of my head (in which case, I'm sure I'd prefer a Linear or KX3 or something).

Still, I guess just like some people don't see much use for managing the recoil/climb/etc of a 556, I don't see much use managing the sound--it always seemed like a reversible argument to me.  I'm debating between the new SF M556 and the Lantac Dragon for this next 14.5" middy, BUT since I know I'll be shooting next to people who might be sensitive to concussiveness, maybe I should look at something else (my thinking was, after 5-10 shots, people just get used to whatever's being shot next to them).

NOTE:  the ONLY time I was a bit surprised by the blast of an AR was a guy shooting a 6.8 with some competition type brake about 3.5ft away behind me (he had been shooting .22LR but switched uppers without me noticing)...it didn't bother me b/c guns are inherently loud and concussive, but I remember thinking, "holy hell that can't be 556"--I figured it must be a 50 beowolf or something crazy, but when I asked, it was a 6.8.
