| I'm looking at a Rainier Arms RUC REV 14.5 as my first AR. I'm having this discussion with a buddy of mine over what would be best. He's a Colt AR fan. First let me describe myself. I'm only 5'5 and about 140lbs. I'm liking the RUC REV because for the money I'm getting an AR made by a place that seems everyone loves and has nothing but good things to say about. It's extremely lightweight at 6 1.7oz and actually comes with a good set of irons unlike a bunch of flat top ars that you have to buy sights for. He's trying to convince me to go Colt 6920. Here's a few reasons why I don't think that's the route I want to go. Colt 6920s are going for about 1200 right now at my local walmart. RUC rev is roughly 1500. 300 dollar difference. He's saying I can take it to Accuracy speaks and have them work on it and I'd have an amazing AR better then Rainier. I live in AZ. I held a 6920 and I think the weight difference is very obvious when compared to a DDV7 which is still heavier then a RUC REV. I'm I crazy for wanting a RUC REV over a colt 6920? I feel like in the end I would invest more money into the Colt. |

Oh God, this ought to be good.
My vote is for the Rainier. Having had both, and owning the 2 Rainier uppers now, I would choose the midlength gas 14.5 over a 16" carbine every day, and twice on Sunday. Accuracy is better on my Rainier, but to be fair, it is free floated, has a Gieselle trigger, etc. The RUC accessories easily make up that few hundred bucks. If you are in to fit and finish, you go with the Rainier. The Customer Service ALONE from the Rainier crew, should sell this rifle, if they were equal rifles. Great guys, and the have a strong presence here. Nothing wrong with a 6920. Next you will hear about investment and resale value of the Colt. Good luck with your decision. |

To me resale value is silly. First of if I'm going to dump $1000+ into a gun and it's such an awesome gun why would I want to sell it? I'd want to keep it forever lol. You NEVER see anyone selling a Noveske. If you do it's rare. I am not sure how this comes into play, but for some reason it does. I do agree. |

RA RUC all the way. Nothing against a Colt, but these two guns aren't on the same playing field.

Not for $300 you won't. You will have to spend over $300 on the Colt to come close to the same features as the RUC comes with. If you like the RUC and what it brings to the table, you would be foolish to buy a Colt and try to turn it into a RUC just to have the prancing pony on the side. Not worth it imo, and you will spend WAY more than $1500 |

So what's the advantage over the 14.5 rainier with the midlength gas system over the 6920's? Remember new ar owner Midlength 14.5 is the new hotness. Supposedly softer shooting, less wear on bolt group. Whatever. I don't see enough of a difference to let it weigh in, if anything it might be undergassed with some of the weaker ammo like Wolf. Between the two, get whichever you prefer. Both are fine rifles. The RUC does give you more for the money though, as long as you like what it has. If you don't like the rail or Geiselle, then buying it to replace those two expensive parts would be silly. But if you like them, you're saving in the long run by buying it already assembled in that configuration. I really like Colt, but I will go with other quality brands if they have what I want. I don't care about resale value because I don't intend on selling them, so it's a moot point. And the changes I make to all my rifles makes them a hard sale anyway. Unless I found a person who wants the same thing, it would sit forever. |

Colt vs. Anything Else? The question comes down to whether you want what the Colt offers. If you want a M4gery with carbine gas, I don't think you can get a "better rifle" than Colt. (Maybe you can get one as good as a Colt, and maybe you can save money doing so, but I don't think you can get "better.")
If you want something Colt doesn't offer? Shorter barrel, different gas system, ambi controls? Then I'd look somewhere else. What about midlength gas? I like it. That extra 2" of gas system length drops pressure, and should give you a rifle that lasts longer and shoots smoother. There's nothing "wrong" with carbine gas----we've proven that it works. I think midlength gas is better, particularly now after its had a few years of product development and refinement. If you're worried about shooting Wolf through a RUC, I'd give Rainier a call or an e-mail and ask them particularly about it. I don't have a RUC, but I wouldn't hesitate to get one. I've swapped e-mails with Rainier on a couple of different subjects, and they've been quick and courteous with their responses. So far as I can tell, everything they offer is first class gear, and I would not hesitate to buy from them, either accessories, parts, or a full rifle. From your posts, OP, it sounds like you're leaning towards the RUC. That's what I'd get----but then I'm just some dood on the internet. Either one, the Rainier or the Colt, will be a fine, fine rifle, and I don't think you can go "wrong" either way. |

lol those brands you'll shoot your eye out kid. go with a real Rifle get your self an BCM MOD 2 Bravo Company it just woks................ Hurpa durpa, durpa hurpa. It just woks, huh? Look, the rifle I started off with when I came back to ARs is a midlength government profile BCM, and it's a fine choice. It's not what the OP is looking for, though, and this kind of drive by "get what I got" business adds nothing---particularly since the OP is new to ARs. Would you care to write a post explaining why the BCM offers advantages over the Colt or the RUC? |
| +1 on rainier. I purchased 2 RUC's, early version, no complaints at all. very good value for the money, and great customer service. the only downside is you will have to wait a bit for them to build your rifle, the upside is you can add stuff if you want to upgrade before they build. |
| Well if you wanna go into the TDP packaging and so on does it have it yes as well as colt does and 2 or 3 others. and no sorry I don't work for BCM but I had a few AR's in my days and tho Colt is a good brand but I think theirs better options out there.I have a BCM and made it to the range this year did good with it. I have not had any problems with it. but again if your looking to shoot a bing off cherry at 600 yards thats whole diff animal... |

Colt doesn't bring anything to the table anymore other than their name. There are companies producing rifles as good and better for cheaper. Even they know it, which is why they are starting to do weird kits and funny finishes on their rifles. Go for the RUC. Quoted for truth right here... |
