| Hello all, lately i have considered buying some form of AR, but i am not very knowledgeable about them. I have 4 different rifles ranging from a .270 to a .300 RUM. I am looking for a rifle to hunt whitetail deer with in MN, along with some target shooting. I am thinking about a .308, but i would rather have the information from people who know what they're talking about. My price range is between 1,000 - 1800 and i am not sure about manufactures. Any information would be helpful. Thanks |

what part of mn?
I have taken over 12 deer right on the SD/MN border since 2004 I have used my RRA entry tac 16" barrel with an eotech. I prefer to walk shelter belts or draws to scare them up but that LEAVES ME TO SHOTS AT RUNNING DEER AT AROUND 150-250 METERS a few times I have gotten lucky and had guys run them to me for a nice 50 meter shot on a running deer. ammo choice is paramount I like open soft tip expanding 62-68 grain I have not had as much luck with hollow points. even 55 grain soft tip has worked for me but I feel better using 64-68 grains. Just remember to shoot until the animal's head is down if the head is up it will run again. If you plan to stand hunt get something with more power like a 308. |

Anything you Google will lead you back to this website, it is the best place to gather info... Take some time and do some reading in the forums and you will get armed with a ton of knowledge to build your own rifle |

Welcome. I went through this a year ago. If you want to stay with a .308 it is a larger rifle (AR10) and can be a lot heavier than something based on the AR15, but can be effective at longer ranges than most AR15 calibers, but not all.
What range do you plan to shoot at? Do you reload your own ammo? |

I hunt in the Alexandria area, and i will be hunting from a stand, so a .308 is what i am considering. Are there any certain manufactures that you would recommend? or a place to purchase them? thanks A .308 AR is an expensive waste of money in your situation. JMHO. It sounds like you have a stable of more traditional hunting rifles. I would simply buy a light weight midlength 16" or rifle length 20" in 5.56 and scope it. That's just what I did and my more traditional rifles have taken a back seat in the closet. Stay away from all the add on crap and either go free float tube or Magpul MOE to keep the weight down. My PSA Magpul MOE edition weighs just 7.4 lbs with a Leupold VX-R 2-7 in Bobro QD mounts, Magpul back up rear, VTAC sling and 20 round mag loaded with 10 rounds. Unless you're hunting moose up there, you don't need a .308 for whitetails. |

You could have the best of both worlds for under 1400$
Get a Colt 6920 and buy a 762x40 barrel for it. Beats the 6.8 and the 300 BO and you can shoot up to the 150 grain .30 cal bullets in it . Great Dear rifle up here in CO for our big Mule Deer. Later get another upper and use the 223 barrel , same bolt and everything for both calibers Great increase in power. Loco |
| so if you stand hunt what distance is your longest shot ? let the job decide which rifle you need . if your not shooting any further than 150 yds then the options are many . If your setting on a stnad over a 600yd bean field the options narrow. . you might want to check out the smith and wesson M & P 10 for a 308 in your price range. |

I want something to hunt with and use at the range, and i rarely use my .270 as my girlfriend is using it. So an AR is something that i want to look into, and why not use it for hunting there is no reason not to hunt with an ar . thats about all I use for a variety of game . I have 5.56 , 300 blackout , 458 socom calibers . I sold my 308 because it was to big and heavy for where I live and hunt . thats why I ask what will be your average shooting range . a 5.56 with barnes 70 grain tsx bullet is a dead deer out to 200 yds . also a 5.56 will be about the cheapest to feed when it comes to range time. |

Check out this section OP. |
| I would go with .223 if you are going to do some range work. It is far cheaper than the other calibers and at a reasonable distance will kill deer just fine. I have a Daniel Defense lightweight that is super accurate under 200 yards that I'll be hunting a little with this year. Some of those other calibers might be a better deer load but they won't be cheap at the range. |
