Seen a couple of Dissy picture threads and discussions here, but didn't see anything addressing my question. Forgive me if I'm treading over old ground and feel free to point me in another direction instead of starting another thread about something already discussed.
I have a flat top PSA Dissy with the standard GI hand guards and A2 front sight. I want the front sight gone because I hate the "co-witness" with my Bushnell Trophy red dot. I would like to remove the A2 front sight and replace it with a "dummy" low-profile gas block. I have one picked out with small Picatinny sections on top and bottom to allow for a flip-up BUIS. Do you foresee any problem with taking off the A2 front sight and simply replacing it with the low profile block? All I really need the block for is to keep the hand guard retainer cap in place, right? Just a matter of making sure the low profile block is installed in the proper place so that there's enough tension to keep the hand guards in place, right? Just hope I'm not missing something here. Sounds pretty easy in theory, but just wondering if anyone has actually tried this. Thanks. |
| A block with a folding buis would be the cleanest solution. There shouldnt be any issues with your plan other than getting the pins out. Solid support, a heavy hammer and stout punch, and determining the small end to hit. Kroil or other penetrating oil helps, too |

I do 99.99% of my shooting in my back yard so I'm not so worried about failure and redundancy. If my Bushnell craps out or if my batteries die or whatever, I'll just go in the house and find something else to do (or get out some pistols) until I get some more batteries. Thanks for the Kroil suggestion. I don't have any of that yet, but I will get some. |

If you removed the FSB you do not need a dummy gas block, unless you want to mount standard handguards. And of course if you do, it is no longer a dissipator. We can't have that. If you are not going to mount standard drop in handguards, just take it off and leave it off. You might consider removing the A2 FSB and replacing it with a folding FSB. |

For now, I want to run standard rifle length handguards without an A2 FSB. I basically want/need the dummy gas block to keep the hand guard cap (is that the correct terminology?) in place. Does that configuration disqualify it from being called a Dissipator? |

I'm missing something here. The main advantage of the Dissy is to offer a rifle-length sighting system on a carbine-length weapon. It sounds like iron sights are pretty far down your list of things to worry about, so it isn't clear to me why you need a Dissy at all.
Now if you want the rifle length handguards because it pleases you, or because you simply like to grasp the rifle further forward, then do what you like. If you feel like explaining the 'why' of your Dissy, please do so, but you don't have to justify it to me. I'm just asking. Moon |

Moon I didn't necessarily want a dissipator barrel, but I saw one at a pretty good price a few months ago when the pickings were pretty slim. I liked the extra sight radius with the iron sights. But after I put an optic on it, I found the front sight rather irritating. So I'm looking for an economical way to ditch the fixed front sight; even if that means no longer having a dissipator set-up. I figure I have a few options: 1) replace front sight with dummy gas block and keep the rifle length hand guards 2) remove the front sight and go with a free float arrangement 3) put a hand guard cap behind the gas block and switch to mid length hand guards I'm leaning towards option 1 or 3 Of course, I'm open to trading my dissipator barrel for a midlength set up w/o a front sight. |

I like the dissy for two main reasons. First is the longer sight radius. Second, there is less exposed barrel which always seems to find a way to burn me. I ordered one from CDNN primarily for reason #1; we'll see how it works out. For the OP, I see what you're doing...with the supply now more available, it might just be easier to swap it out to someone who actually wants a Dissy. There are a few more Luddites like me out there who actually like iron sights, Moon |
