Some uppers are machined better then others, I lap all the uppers I install. Oddly the worst one was a BCM upper.

have you ever fired a group and then swapped the barrel over to an upper that youve lapped and the fired another group? if so what kinda difference did you see? tom/pigpen60

No, just part of my build procedure. It was recommended to me by a long time CMP AR builder (I've been shooting CMP since 02), same thing is done to custom bolt action match guns.

I have lapped one upper when I switched barrel nuts and it got the timing perfect. Helped in my situation.

I'd say 999 out of 1000 perfectly functioning ARs havent been lapped.
You can do it if you want, but it's a bit of an art and not as easy as it sounds, to do it right anyway (and if you're not going to do it right, why fuccin bother?).
