If I put this in the wrong place I apologize.
I like the UBR for its storage and weight but I like the look of the standard buffer tube more. I was trying to pull my ubr off this evening to see how it would look with a standard buffer tube and stumbled upon something I hadnt seen before though it seems like magpul designed it this way. I couldn't get the top tube to come off so I took off the cheek piece to see if there was something going on beneath it that was causing the tube not to come off and of course there was not, It is just a really tight fit. What I did discover was another 2 sets of holes for the cheek piece to screw into. This allowed me to back the cheek piece up, exposing the tube and giving the ubr more of a classic look but with the sturdiness and extra weight intact. I only tried this on setting number 2 which is my standing shooting position for the stock. At this position the ubr appears to be all the way collapsed but in fact is extended to my preferred position. This may be common knowledge to some folks but I having found anything written about it so I thought I'd share. Here are the before and after pics. Note in the second pic the exposed hole on the buffer tube that the cheek piece comes screwed into when you get the stock new. There are 2 more sets of holes under the check piece. | How so? It's still a fixed cheek piece with a consistent cheek weld. I only operate the stock between setting 2 standing and setting 4 sitting. It operates as good as it ever has for me. Also for larger shooters that need full extension to shoot with it will bring the cheek plate back closer to their heads giving the more to get a good weld with. If I had to sacrifice anyhting I would not have done it. I just felt like I got the best of both world for "me" set up like this. Also, If not for this reason why did magpul put the extra holes in the first place? |

So you compromised function for looks? The UBR was constructed so that the end-user would have a move comfortable and consistent cheek weld. Your aesthetic alteration just turned it into a worse functioning component. WTH are you talking about? All it did was sacrifice the two shortest notches of adjustment...
You don't even own a UBR do you? The additional screw holes for the cheekpiece are already there. |

I have a newer one presently. I used to have the old model with two cheek weld pieces but I sold it. I took it that the OP detached the cheek weld piece and slid it back. Pretty much. The real reason I was looking to take it off and looking at replacing it was I close the damn thing on my nipple the other day. That thing is almost like scissors, damn near maimed me and kinda pissed me off. |

He did, by unscrewing the 4 small screws and screwing them into the more rearward set of threaded holes that are already there. What do you think he did to compromise his stock by doing so? All it does is give a better cheekweld without the gap behind the cheekpiece for when the stock is further out. |
