I wish I was able to start as young as you so, congrats on your AR and you've got a great set of parents. Quad rails, buttstocks, and pistol grips are all personal preference but, I would start by looking at Magpul, B5 systems. and VLTOR for the buttstocks. For the grip, look at the BCM gunfighter and magpul's offerings.

There are a ton of rail options but, my short list would be KAC, Centurion, Daniel Defense, Rainier Arms,Troy, Seekins, and a few others..Biggest thing is to set a budget and see where you can go from there..

Edit: Take some time and look through the picture threads and the build it yourself forums. Members usually list what their build consists of and if you see something you like research it and see what kind of reviews it has received. There is a saying here and it goes "buy once, cry once". I know that you may not have endless amounts of money to throw into your rifle so, take you time, save up, and learn to shoot what you have now before you go throwing away money on stuff you really don't need.

A rack grade AR is just as effective and anything else out there as long as it's from a reputable manufacturer and you've thoroughly tested it. Hang out in your hometown forum and talk to the guys in your area and they may be able to help you source things locally for cheap..Good luck..

Hard to give options without a budget. Magpul has some quality sets that are moderately priced but very good quality.

Ammo and Mags

Magpul trigger guard, and a BCM or Magpul grip

A B5 Bravo, MOE, CTR, IMOD, SOPMOD, Stock

VCAS Sling

Primary Arms or Vortex SPARC/strikefire red dot if on a budget
Aimpoint or EoTech if not on a budget

You need to do some reading here.

But having said that I would put a red dot sight on it and a light. Tasco makes the Pro Point which is a fairly rugged 5 MOA dot sight that is well under a hundred bucks.
( I'm assuming a limited budget)   And there are many inexpensive flashlights that will fit a 1 inch scope ring. Try to find the brightest possible and KEEP IT SIMPLE- get one with a on/off switch only.

Then ammo and mags and practice. It shouldn't be uncomfortable to shoot, so maybe seek out some instruction from some one who is familiar with ARs.

Good luck, stay safe and welcome to the site!

Jackpot11,

Keep it simple. Add those things you really need or that actually enhance the rifle's performance. A mag-pul trigger guard would be a good example.
KEEP IT LIGHT. The beauty of the AR is that it handles like a dream. Put a lot of trash on it and the utility goes right out the window. There's a BIG difference in what you can use in a match scenario and what you have to hump for days on end.

IMHO, the Colt 6920 LE Carbine is close to perfect out of the box. Add optics(co-witnessed), the mag-pul trigger guard, and a few other NEEDED items and you'll be in good shape.

As a trainer I see rifles come to courses all "tricked out", by day 2 the fancy stuff is gone and the rifles are down to a bare minimum of weight and options.

Enjoy your new rifle.

Hey bud, I was only a few years older than you when I got started but I was still way younger than most the geezers here

You may not like my advice much right now but don't make the mistake a lot of new AR owners make. Rock what you got for a while, get good with it and learn it in and out.

After a while you'll start to figure out what all you want to change up and what you want to keep the same. If you're parents have any ARs with upgrades on them or if they have some friends with ARs, see if you can give them a go and get an idea what you like from them.

In any case, stay safe and have fun with your new rifle

Guys, I would be careful with this thread.  No offense to the OP, but this is the type of thread that can be used to show how "Assault Weapon Owners are recruiting children to become shooters" in the typical Libtards eyes.

The libtards have all the motivation they need. Confiscation is their final solution.

OP, I know you want to pimp out your new AR with all the bells and whistles, but all that stuff won't make you a better shooter. Mags and ammo (which is hard enough to find) should be your only concern right now. Learn the platform by shooting as much as you can. If you are dead set on customizing, buy used parts from the EE. You are probably going to buy a lot of different parts before you find what works best for you. Learn your iron sights.

I'm just saying to use discretion.  Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't this be a straw purchase if he's buying a gun for himself with his money, and his parents did the background check?  Then we all told a 14 year old to buy bullets and magazines for said gun.

Most of us were given guns as kids, I'm not disputing that, but did we advertise it on the internet?

We cannot assume that every teenager that buys a rifle is going to go to a school and shoot it up.  Maybe this kid really wants to get experience with the rifle.  I knew a lot of guys in boot who could have got some trigger time on any rifle and it would have helped them.  I get what you are saying but the 2nd Amendment does not have an age limitation and you can bet your ass 14 year old boys were fighting in the revolution when our country fought for independence from England.  No law says he cannot have that rifle everything he has done is perfectly legal and HOORAH for him!  Also maybe you has plans to join up and being familiar with the AR would be a benefit.

OP my suggestion is for you to shoot it and try and shoot others rifles that have mods and find what you like.  Magpul seems to work great and for people on budgets or limited income it is a great fit.  Read around here and welcome.  Be safe and always listen that is how you learn you will never know everything just like me I learn new things all the time.

Not my picture but you could make your AR look like this with the moe hanguard, and add an AFG as well.

Budget build

OR it could be like mine with a Larue quad rail.

No budget build.

Man I wish I started buying my own stuff that early, I didn't start buying my own guns till I turned 16. First I got a Glock 23, Then I saved up and got a Rock River AR right before I turned 18. I left it stock for almost a year and a half, then I got into hog hunting and kinda made it into a budget build. Now almost another year and half later I am in the middle of going all out on it (its in pieces on the table behind me )
http://img201.imageshack.us/img201/1806/0032qy.jpg
That's a pic of it after I got it sighted in with all my new budget parts on it.
Right now I am installing a Troy alpha vtac 15'' FF rail, DD low pro gas block and replacing the A2 flash hider with a Yankee Hill flash hider. Next pay check I will be changing the Magpul MOE stock for a UBR stock. (I also am no longer using the sightmark red dot, I replaced that a few months ago with a Eotech 512) So it really comes down to what you want to do, You can build a budget/KISS rifle or save up and get higher end parts now. I would almost say Keep it cheap till you learn what you want in a rifle. I know what I wanted when I bought the gun and now are nowhere near the same things. In that time frame I have learned to shoot with an AR better, My style of shooting is so different, and with learning what style of shooting you like, the accessories you need change with it. I will probably post some pics of it after I get done working on it, so keep an eye out for them if you are interested.

Remember Just keep it fun and with time you have an awesome work of gun art that is all your own.

Congratulations on the purchase of your AR15, and welcome to the board.

The more you handle the weapon, the more comfortable it will become, over time there are changes  you will want to make.  I am former military, and a long time city cop, as well as a long time firearm instructor, armorer, TL and some other things.  I have trained my nephews since they were younger than you, and have learned a few things about working with younger shooters.

One of the first things that comes into mind is proper manipulation of the weapon.  With that in mind, find a grip that will fit YOUR hand.  That may very well mean to find a smaller grip, but you want to size the weapon to fit you as much as possible.  Some of those grips include the Magpul K grip, and Ergo.

I'll update this a little more in a bit.

I would save up for a Quality Optic and a grip thats fits your hand comfortably... the rest will come with time as you use the rifle and figure out what you need not want... many of us here have at least 1 box of "stuff" that we thought we needed or was tacticool... being young and just getting into the AR platform I would suggest spend your money wisely on ammo and mags (after the optic and grip)... practice, practice, practice and good luck!

I got my first gun when I was 14 too. It was a Benelli Montefeltro that my dad bought for me. I'm 24 now and still shoot the Benelli regularly. Believe it or not, it's still my favorite gun that I own.

My advice to you is, before you start decking out your rifle, buy some ammo and really learn how to use the rifle. Know how to safely operate it. Then practice, practice, practice. You can make your rifle as "cool" as you want but it won't make you a better shooter. My dad always kept a stock pile of ammo for me to use. That's what made me a decent shooter.

I, too, got a Windham SRC not too long ago and had the same uncomfortable feeling shooting it (mostly because of the buttstock and grip). I swapped out the furniture for mostly Magpul stuff along with an extended rail to mount my AFG, front BUIS, and light (got on Amazon for $50). The gun feels a lot better now.

The Windham SRC is the gun on top:

OP welcome to arfcom.  I'd hit the hometown section and ask about meeting up with members to see if they will meet you at a range and let you swap their lowers to your upper and try out the various grips and stocks.

As others have said, shoot yours and get used to it.  Figure out what you might want to change and the direction you want to take.

What role will the rifle play? Short range or long range?  Figure out if you would want a scope or a red dot.  Once you get the hang of the iron sights, a optic is usually the next progression.  DO NOT go cheap on the sight.  The lowest end optic I would ever run is a Vortex.  That's for both scope or red dot.

I was a few years younger than you when I started with the AR15. Save your money. Focus on the fundamentals of markmanship. My best advice I could give is to go to an NRA/CMP junior's smallbore club and learn to shoot right.

ETA: It's nice to know I'm not the only one who signed up when I was 14.

like jboy said, look at the picture threads (theres a ton of them) and just research what you like. unless its a brand new product, theres usually a lot of feedback from users about "rail x" or "grip z".
also my first gun was a ban era a2 olympic, which i got from my dad at the age of 12 or 13. you better believe if i had access to todays ar15.com and money to spend it would have been tac'd out beyond belief . that being said, resist the urge the spend money on everything (except mags and ammo which automatically get a pass)

Shoot it with irons until you can't miss with them.

Buy shit later when you figure out you actually need it. I didn't buy a single upgrade for my AR until after a year of shooting it. Just to let you know how much I shot it, I burned out the barrel in two years.

I always see guy slap on $400 of UTG parts when they could have used that money on ammo to train or buy an Aimpoint PRO. You don't need a quad rail, bipod, folding vertical grip, laser, scope, red dot, light, mag well grip, AFG, Timney trigger, mag couplers, and other worthless junk on your rifle.

Congrats on the Gun.

This is what mine looked like when I first got it. July 4 2011. I immediately changed the A2 grip for Magpul MOE. Other than that I bought ammo and PMAGs.

It wasn't until February of last year that I started to add some things to it. An illuminated optic and a rail. Later that year I got a sling. I'm now looking for a light. And I'm considering ditching the Viper PST and having an aimpoint T-1. What I'm saying is that you will find what you want after you spend some time with it.
