I've searched the archives but not really sure where to look.
I've always shot standard, right handed rifles as a lefty because....well, I haven't had a choice....it's a right handed world. I currently own a DDM4v7 and while it's great, I often wonder what it would it be like to have a custom, left handed AR. Are there any quality manufacturers that make a left handed receiver, BCG, Etc, etc? I'm planning my first, custom AR build and just curious if building a left handed AR is even viable....if not I will drop it and move on. |
| As a left handed shooter I will direct you to my left handed FAQ Personally I did not like the left handed uppers. the best thing to do is make your lower ambidextrous |
|
Thanks for the link.....basically telling me to continue to live in a right handed world....HA!
Kinda figured......at least it's coming from a lefty. Hell, I couldn't cut paper with those green handled scissors they gave us in elementary school. Anybody else have to use those? You righties have no idea what Im even talking about because everything is made for you. Lucky bastards! |
|
As I started putting my notes together "PARTS" was/is one of my major concerns.
If I have to go completely Stag,....and from my reading is not mil spec with varying opinions of quality then I will probably continue to adapt.... I read somewhere that Noveske has made or does make some lefty parts but they must not make a big deal about it because I can't find much on it. I would totally save my money for a completely left handed Noveske. If you see me at the range I will be the guy with a mouthful of gas and faceful of brass........ Kidding. Thanks for the input...kinda what I figured but worth a shot. |

Hey F_C,
I know I'm new here...heck I haven't even finished my first build. But I, too, am a lefty and thought about building one but came to many of the same conclusions. At SHOT show, apparently Rock River Arms introduced a new lefty version. You can read a little blurb about it in the latest ARSHunt online mag here Rock River Arms: Here's the direct link to the RRA Lef-T page. They even use left handed threads in the barrel. I think that might be a bit of hooey about better barrel stabilization. As an engineer, I can't imagine that anyone would notice a differenct between RH and LH threaded barrel. Maybe they are just hoping for a placebo effect. All that said, if you ever break the bolt carrier and RRA or other company stopped making them, you'd be SOL for a replacement. After my [righty] AR built, I am going to buy a bolt gun and it WILL be a lefty. Everything else I've got is inherently righty; but they've all been free as hand-me-downs so I don't complain. The only thing so far that gets me once in a while is my Colt .45. The bolt guns are no problem due to the slower ejection and less rearward arc, but I can't wait until I can more easily cycle the action. Good luck. matel |

I don't understand the lefty bolt gun. As a lefty, I find it easier to use a right handed bolt gun as I can maintain control over the grip.
Bolt guns don't have the blowback problems. I do agree that left handed bolts and carriers can be a pain to find. There is also something about an "ambi" barrel extension that I've heard of. Regular barrels seem to work fine with lefty BCGs. |
|
See, I totally disagree on the bolts....I can't shoot a right handed bolt to save my life.....literally!
They might as well be single shots. That's interesting that you don't have any problems with them. And I don't think it's not there isn't ANY left handed parts, what concerns me is available QUALITY left handed parts. But I guess even that is somewhat subjective. It's cool to hear from different left handed shooters nonetheless. I'm going to look up the RR stuff. I have a feeling I'm going to sissy out and build a standard AR....especially since it's my first build and nothing here has made me feel any better about it. Its going to be a big enough challenge for an ADD guy like myself as it is. Too many shiny objects! |
| I just used a right handed upper and an ambi safety. The other controls I left alone for now... I have been messing with the AR, M-16, M-4 series since the old M-16A1 and do not have a problem...Hell I still can do the manual of arms as per the U.S.M.C. Inspection Arms etc .So yes on changing the safety controls and the others , not so much. Hell I used to be able to hit the bolt release with my left hand, while holding the pistol grip.....The mag catch you can reach with your thumb.....It just takes practice. Try learning how to do this during Boot Camp while being yelled at, you learn or you suffer and I learned.....Getting a left handed upper just makes your weapon a 10% er and have less parts in common with everyone else...When you need the parts you can't get them...Hell today I saw at a pawn shop a nice custom Winchester Pattern 1917 in 30.06 with a full LEFT HANDED STOCK...Yes the stock was like some European Style (Manlecher ?) that almost went to the muzzle....I picked it up and brought it to my shoulder and it fit......As a left handed stock should.....Oh well they wanted to much (750.00).... |
|
As lefties we have always adapted, especially with firearms. I have ambi controls on all my handguns and will probably put them
on my new lower. My issue isn't so much the lower controls as it is having my face next to the receiver when I've got the rifle tucked in nice and tight with the stock all the way collapsed. I've not gotten completely comfortable with that yet and it's in my head for some stupid reason. As far as barrels being twisted to the left....I've read descriptions like " 1-7 right hand twist"...... I've thought, is that even necessary because I damn sure haven't seen a 1-7 left handed twist? |
| If you decide to build a lefty upper have no fear Stag makes and excellent product. I've had one of their left handed 20" rifles for several years now and I have lost count of how many rounds I've put through it (several thousand) and the rifle has never had a hiccup. |
|
I have a Stag 2TL upper that's been flawless in performance. If you were a newbie I'd say just get a righty but since you've been there done that I'd say you can't go wrong with Stag. I've switched back to a righty as my primary weapon as I found no benefit to the lefty upper and would rather have the parts compatibility. Just give me an ambi-safety and I'm GTG.

I'm right handed but cross eye dominant so I shoot lefty. I've honestly never had a problem and even find it to be more comfortable shooting a rifle left handed. Same here man. Lost sight in my right eye when I was 8 and started shooting lefty. Several years down the road and i haven't once been struck by brass or gas. (If either of those are your concerns) No need for a lefty build OP IMHO, but it's all personal preference I guess. |

My son is a lefty, but has no desire to own a left-handed AR (or other lefty gun.) He wants to standardize, and has adjusted just fine. In more normal times, I'd say go for it and what the hell. A mirror image anything is just plain interesting. But we're not in normal times, and finding standard AR parts on down the road could be a challenge. Finding nonstandard parts is something to think pretty hard about. In the dim mists of time, before the A2 brass deflector, I recall our sergeants trying to root out Hydramatic-built guns for the lefties, as they reputedly kicked the brass more to the front. Moon |

I have one lefty AR (stag)--my first--and many other righty AR's. I shoot lefty.
I'm tired of breathing fumes on my righty rifles....if you are doing more than slow fire bench shooting, you'll appreciate the lefty port. I start getting too many fumes at about round #7 on a mag dump. My 5.45 upper starts making my eyes water at the second mag dump. ANd it's hard to breathe--I have to back off the firing line and wait for the smoke to clear. Ambi lower controls are nice--raptor, badass all I need. Anything else is frosting! |

Rock River is making LH AR's now. My good friend we built an AR for his son with a a Stag upper and it eats everything he feeds it. The boy runs his rifle as hard as it will go everytime he gets a 30 rd mag it is gone in a few seconds The world has not forgot about you lefties just that so few of you exist. |
