Even pre-madness, what was the cheapest acceptable fully configured rifle that you would have been comfortable with for the long haul, general use (HD & plinking). I'll start...
Palmetto State Armory, Patrol Carbine (included Aimpoint Pro) ~ $1,000 on sale Magpul MOE Handguard ~ $30 Magpul MOE Stock ~ $60 Magpul MOE Pistol Grip ~ $20 Magpul MOE Illumination Kit ~ $20 Surefire M300A Mini Scout Weapon Light ~ $250 BCM Gunfighter Mod3 CH ~ $45 Geissele SSA-E ~$200 V-Tac Sling - $35 Total - $1,660 I don't currently own this, and not completely comfortable with carbine length handguards given the way I shoot, but it was fun to think about. Even when things were "cheap", still not that cheap. |

I have $2800 in my SBR without the suppressor, but the cheapest acceptable AR for me would be around $850 most likely. Frequently, good parts and garbage parts are almost identical in price. It's cheaper to do things right the first time. |

I meant to stress that it was something you could potentially own for the long haul and have it be your only AR - no upgrading in the future. For me, that includes a nice trigger and light, but everyone's preferences vary. I don't mean strictly for function, otherwise the $700 stock PSA would be the way I would have gone (when it was on sale for that). |

short answer : one that goes bang every time.
Long answer: Id say ~700-1500 depending on accessories. Id say My first build would fit into this category. Specs below BCM 16" middy LW w/BCM bolt DoubleStar lower and lpk Magpul furniture (ctr stock, miad grip, moe handguard, MVG) Magpul mbus, and an Inforce WML. back in the summer you could put this together for around 1200 bucks. |

My $550 PSA middy is everything I need and nothing I don't. no pics? as soon as I get my scuba gear, I may have it again. http://oldsouthoffroad.com/4/2012-08-04_09-49-48_590.jpg Yeah I could probably 'make do' with that as well.. but why the hell would I when there's so many toys and rails and attachments to accessorize with

Cheapest? In its original config...?
NFA Lower with plastic trigger group- $55 A2 upper that was machined with the carrying handle groove crooked - Free Colt Barrel with A frame front sight- Free (It was bent, I straightened it with a Harbor Freight 10 ton press. It runs like a top now and is accurate) BC - (from buddy out of a kaput 9mm conversion) - Free Bolt - $50 (only non cheapo thing on here...kind of offended me that I didn't have one laying around but it's kind of a safety thing too.) A2 Grip - $1 (Ordered from Rainier Arms with other stuff) El cheapo collapsible stock w/buffer tube- $20 from a buddy Carrying handle that I found - Free Dust cover that I found on a range - Free (except the cost of the Break Free that I used on it) Plastic Hand guards with no heat shields at all - Free $106 Do I ever want to depend on it? Hell No! Is it cheating to use free parts...maybe. So far I've replaced the Upper with a PSA blem ($50), put in a proper metal mil spec trigger group that I had left over after swapping in an ALG into another rifle, and plopped a PA microdot on it. (EDIT:As soon as I have one more lower the NFA lower is going away!) My real, can live with it, cheapest rifle would basically be an M4gery built out of low price milspec components. It would be around $700-750 with a PA microdot. |
