Went to the range to zero my dads new rifle and had some minor issues. Specs are; 16" PSA Premium upper, govt. profile, mid length gas system with standard carbine spring and carbine buffer, BCM BCG. Ammo used was Federal XM855. Rifle is ejecting at approximately 5 o'clock, which in and of itself wouldn't bother me much, but the bolt did not lock to the rear once, and I tried 3 different Pmags which were fairly new and an older Lancer L5.
Other than opening up the gas port a bit do I have any other options? As I said, already running standard carbine spring and buffer, and the ammo obviously shouldn't be an issue. Same ammo and mags worked fine in my suppressed 11.5 BCM with H2 buffer and white Sprinco spring so I know they're not an issue. Any help would be greatly appreciated. |
| Check the gas key is secure, that the gas rings are a tight fit in the carrier, and that you don't have excessive gas escaping from the gas block/gas tube. Do NOT start drilling out your gas port until you have thoroughly investigated all other causes (including trying different ammo) |
| It could be the BCG like others have said. Also might be worth looking around the gas block and where the gas tube inserts into to to see if there are any obvious signs of gas blowing out. I rebuilt a Colt with a low profile Rainier Arms gas block and it short stroked about 30% of the time the first time I had it out. I contacted Rainier and they said they'd be more than happy to replace it, or I could try shooting another couple hundred rounds and see if it sealed up. I had noticed some soot accumulating on the hand guard around where the gas block was, so I took their advice and shot it a bit more. No more malfunctions, and no more soot leaking out. |
| Talk about the lowr, particularly whether or not it's seen a lot of use. Bolt catches wear, and some are less robust than others. Make sure that catch is square, just as large at the catch/bolt interface as the one in your suppressed gun, and that it's not looking worn or dragging. |

There's no BAD lever or any other crap hanging off the bolt catch so that's out but thanks, that was a good thought as I had to get rid of the one BAD lever I did have due to this exact issue.
This is a new lower (less than 1,500 rounds) and has functioned 100% on another upper I have (14.5" DD barreled midlength) so I am pretty sure it isn't the lower. I have used the carrier in other rifles before without issue, but something may have loosened up so I'll check that out. I think the gas block may be the culprit, if it isn't too bad I'll try shooting it a bunch and hope it seals itself up a bit. Thanks guys. |

Cleaned and lubed properly with CLP? Tried running it wetter inside the bolt carrier and outside of bolt? Break it in a bit... I bet it settles in as the bolt gas rings seat into the chrome lining of the carrier. Sorry, forgot to mention that detail, but yes everything was very well lubed with Slip 2000 EWL. I run my guns pretty wet. I'll be breaking it in this weekend a bit more hopefully. Wish I could find ammo somewhere, hate shooting into my stack, no matter how deep it is, without replacing it
