I have an M4 and wanted to put a vertical grip on it.  So I bought a rail at a gun show from a regular AR-15 gun/smith parts dealer that is supposed to attach to the lower handguard.  It didn't fit properly (holes didn't line up).  I brought the lower handguard and the rail back to the dealer at the gun show.  He kept my lower handguard and gave me a new lower handguard with the rail already attached.  Seemed easy enough.

When I tried putting the lower handguard on my M4, that's when I found out the new lower didn't match match my current upper handguard.  The new one was narrower toward the front and doesn't seem to fit the circumference of the handguard cap the way the old upper handguard does.  I've been told that are two different sizes for the M4 handguards  (I believe the two types are the CAR and the other a carbine handguard?)

I  did get the new lower handguard on the gun finally, but I don't like how my handguards are so mismatched.

I have photos of the handguards where they mismatch at the front if that would help with diagnosing this.  I don't know how to attach the photos here, but I can email them to someone who can help me with this.

The new lower handguard with the rail is clearly much narrower and you can see a visible gap where the upper and lower handguards don't meet on one  side (everything matches on the other side, though).  What upper handguard do I need to buy to get these two parts to match?  I cannot get in touch with the dealer (his voicemail is full and he doesn't pick up.)  This has me totally confused.

There are two sizes/shapes for carbine length hand guards:  CAR and M4.  The CARs are round (in cross section) and taper from back to front.  The M4s are oval (taller in vertical axis) and do not taper.
