I got 2 complete uppers from a friend and im not sure how to identify make and model.
I cant seem to find any markings on them... The guy at my local gun store said he thinks they are Colts.
Is there any other way to tell? or am i just missing something on them?

Thanks

Most Colt uppers should be marked with a C

It isn't a Colt, but I don't know who made it though.  It kind of looks like a Model 1 or similar.

Are there any markings on the top of the barrel in front of the sight base?  Also could you get a picture of both sides of the front sight base, mainly the taper pins and sling swivel rivet.

Okay, going by the roll pin holding the sling swivel in place instead of a rivet and the shape of the taper pins(not really tapered) in the front sight base as well as the shape of the barrel, I am going to say it is probably a non chrome lined Wilson barrel.

This upper was probably sold by one of the numerous budget parts companies such as Model 1, M&A, etc.  I hope someone didn't pass it off as a Colt to your friend.  It will work just fine though for almost anything most of us will ever use it for.

My friend didnt know what it was at all when he got it... He gave it to me to research it all.
He got 2 identical uppers 1 lower (Essential Arms pre-ban model J-15) scope, 1 mag and a case to carry it all.
when i found out the lower was not legal to have in CA he did not want it all... Gave me all the parts except lower.
Now he is asking me to find out how or what he can do with the lower.
I went and picked up 2 lowers a few weeks ago for 100 each and now have 2 full legal AR's the guy at the gun store told me they looked like colts.

Thanks

Cool beans.

If that lower is really preban, as in pre 94, I am sure you could find a really nice home for it behind enemy lines in one of the states with a ban still in effect.  I sold my last preban to a guy in New York after the federal ban expired in 2004.

I don't remember how I did it or at least how I found a buyer, but I know I had to send the serial number to prospective buyer for them to verify with the manufacturer that it was preban.  Then you ship the lower to a dealer in their state that they have set up to receive it.

I think I went over to one of the Home Town Forums here and asked how to go about it.  We then worked it out through IMs.  I didn't make any money on it, but I didn't lose anything either.  It was just one way of getting a good gun into the hands of someone who would appreciate it more since I was able to buy "preban" guns again.
