Will a new bolt and carrier group work in an old/used upper and barrel. I have a RRA upper that I've probably shot around 5000k or so rounds through and the upper has some marks from wearing in. Can i put a new bcg in or will ther be issues?

Check the headspace of the bolt/barrel combination to ensure you have a safe rifle.

Most times, a new bolt in an old barrel is fine.

+1 on checking the headspace.

Brownells sells head space gauges for go and no go.
Order the gauge for your chamber IE .556mm or 223 Remington etc.
To use them, you remove the extractor, then slide the gauge into a clean chamber. The bolt must lock up on a go gauge. It shouldn't lock up on a no go gauge.
If it does, it means that the chamber is worn or bolt is out of spec. If it's bad you may have issues with popping primers or if it's really bad the gun will be unsafe to fire as you could split the brass as it fires or other issues.

Don't forget to mention to chamber by hand.  Not to insert the gauge, and then hit the bolt release...
