OK,the end goal is a longer sight radius.

I have an upper with an A2 fsb.

If I shave the block down to just the gas block, will I be able to put a set of rifle hand guards over top of it without modifying the hand guards?

Gonna set a new front sight with set screws.

thanks

should work.  iirc, the Bushmaster uses standard handguards on theirs.

Especially if you use Magpul handguards, they have a bit more room up top.

Compared in pics, you will have PLENTY of room.

Yes, I did this with my .458 socom. Lo pro gas block then a clamp on, railed gas block near the muzzle with a fixed front sight on the railed portion. To ensure proper alignment, mount a carry handle on the upper, Put your handguards on the barrel nut, put the handguard cap on the front of HGs, slide FSB onto barrel snugged up against HG cap, turn rifle upside down! Place upside down rifle on a flat surface and use the FSB ears and rear sight apature to square everything up. Once you are happy with it, tighten down the FSB screws, if they are clamp on. Otherwise mark where you will need to drill for set screw or taper pins. Armalite makes a clamp on A2 style FSB, or go the route I did with railed gas block. I had to go that route due to the larger diameter of the .458 barrel.

This thread would be worthless without pics:

Here's my first build - just finished - mock Dissipator (?) Also looks "Piston" but isn't. 16" barrel -  I had the Lo-Pro block (no rails) and left it AND the round carbine handguard end cap in-place. The C5 handguards w. single shields close over the cap, plus the cap fills in a little gap behind the three-screw lo-pro block. I originally cut slots in the shields but they then rattled and the cap didn't need the space after all. Replaced with complete shields.

The front end is a quad-rail barrel clamp off of a popular auction site. NO    it isn't some two hundred dollar designer component, but it's level and solid. I then added a small riser block (same source) to put the sight right at the receiver-top level. With that little riser, I did have to "Dremel out" two little areas to let the sight tabs depress far enough to lock/unlock the sight. Touched up with a black paint pen and good to go. Trigger guard is Magpul polymer. Will change round fwd assist button to teardrop at some point. I shoot lefty and can use the round, but I just like the teardrop more.

The grip is by Mako. Not a precision "target" grip, but it locks-up good and is fine for a carbine and most kinds of shooting. Also adds to the low-drag look. This will give me more room in a case and I might could use a smaller scabbard type carrier. The stock is Spike's and it has a 7075 mil-spec tube. Need to add a heavier, better buffer. Has one of those rubber pads on it. Magwell has the Mako/FAB grip/magwell guide - I love it. Note: I had to file-out a small notch in the back of the unit to let the rib on back of the Pmags move freely - previously they were very tight. When filing, be careful to not file into the bottom screw channel.
