I'm new to the AR - I am USMC M-14 vintage. I want one. Seems the Colt LE 6920 is the standard. Why it over the other Colts with the flip down front and rear sites? What is the Bushmaster equivalent? Those are the only 2 brands I seem to have a chance of getting now, if even them. I see AR's with a u-shpped rear site - is that an optic or manual? Is a small optic desirable?
My priority is for SHTF bug out carry, so I think the M-4 type is for me. I also need PMAGs - all of this before the ban. Wish me luck - thanks for any advice. |

The Colt is somewhat the standard because they made/make them for the military. They command a certain $$$ premium for that reason. They do a good job with quality also. I'm not sure what you mean by "U-shaped" sight. An AR, with or without a carry handle can be fitted with back up iron sights (BUIS) to be used with a red-dot optic. Don't worry about an optic now. Use your money for the AR and mags. Bushmaster does make an equivalent, I think it's called the M4 carbine or something like it. The "Patrolman's Carbine" is very similar also. I'm not as familiar with the naming of Bushmasters these days. Since things are so crazy these days, I would expand your options to include the following brands if you come across one: Smith & Wesson M&P, Sig M400, Stag, Palmetto State Armory, Rock River Arms. All make a good AR. PMAG's - they're shipping them. Just find a reputable dealer (AIM, Brownells, etc) and watch the website like a hawk. You'll get some before any legislation is voted on. Also, there is nothing wrong with USGI aluminum mags and they are much easier to find. |

Wish me luck - thanks for any advice. good luck on finding one I personally have a Rock River CAR, they are every bit as good, but the Colts are GTG if you can find one. As for the sights I would get a carrying handle A2 style and upgrade later its probably more similar to the M14 what you are already use too. Flip or BUIS sights, there are 100s of them, and they take some getting use too especially shooting with optics IMHO. As for optics they will run you as much as the rifle, they work well but again take some getting use too the zeroing process, and once zeroed they are dead nuts in a CQB situation. Still I'd start small and build up as you get better with it, but of course its all up to you though. Oh and welcome aboard |
