I know this may sound trivial, but is there any real advantage to having a mil-spec buffer setup as compared to a commercial type? I am new to working with AR's as far as building/modifying them.  I have a Double Star DS-4  and a Colt 6920, but i will probably leave the Colt as-is.  Also, if i switch out the buffer tube assembly on the Double Star, can i just unscrew the commercial tube and screw the mil-spec one in, or is it a different thred size than what is on my reciever?

There are more stock options for mil spec sized tubes. You can indeed just screw one out and screw the other one in.

Thanks. Thats what i was wondering. I didnt want to invest in a mil-spec assembly, only not to be able to use it.

I'd stick will milspec for parts compatibility

To be honest though I've used a good handful of different buffer tubes and there is a difference in quality and how smooth it feels when you're cycling the action.  The best I have are vltor tubes with decent springs, noting some springs also cycle smoother than others

I believe the brownells.com 'stock completion kits' use vltor items

More options for mil type tubes than commercial. Used to be the other way around not to terribly long ago.
